Fall asleep to the sounds of owls hooting and rhinos roaming, and awaken to the trumpeting of elephants and lions roaring during a Roar & Snore camp-over at the San Diego Zoos Wild Animal Park beginning May 8.
The all-inclusive overnight adventure offers guests private, guided walking tours behind the scenes of several popular exhibits. Campers get special up-close animal encounters with a variety of species -- such as a kinkajou, aardvark or an African-crested porcupine to name just a few.
Dinner, breakfast, tents and lanterns are provided and the campground is in an enchanting location overlooking the 100-acre East Africa habitat where hundreds of rare animals roam in herds including giraffe, wildebeest, gazelle, rhino and more.
After an exclusive evening of private walking tours, presentations and mingling around the campfire eating Smores, guests awake early for a hot breakfast and a "Dawn Discovery hike to Condor Ridge and a special attraction -- Dino Mountain through Labor Day. From there campers will head to Nairobi Village and board the Wgasa Bush Line Railway for a private guided tram tour around the Parks largest habitats to observe and learn about rare and endangered African and Asian wildlife.
Roar & Snore is offered to guests 8 years and older on Fridays and Saturdays with select Sundays -- through Oct. 23. However, for the first time ever, three special dates have been added to accommodate families with children as young as four years old who want to attend the sleepover with an older sibling and their parents. These dates are June 12, July 31 and September 18. The family special nights include all the traditional fun of a regular Roar & Snore adventure, plus special activities for the youngsters.
Tents are provided, but guests are encouraged to bring appropriate overnight toiletries, a sleeping bag and pillow. Sleeping bags and pillows may be rented for an additional charge.
Reservations are required and are accepted on a first-come, first-served basis. Call soon because Roar & Snore sells out.
Prices are $126 for adults and $106 for children ages 8 to 11, plus cost of admission to the Park. Members of the Zoological Society of San Diego do not need to pay admission fee. Groups of 15 or more receive a 10 percent discount. Special bookings are available as early as April. For further Roar & Snore information or a brochure containing detailed information, call (619) 718-3050 or visit www.wildanimalpark.org. The 1,800-acre San Diego Zoos Wild Animal Park (more than half of which has been set aside as protected native species habitat) is operated by the not-for-profit Zoological Society of San Diego. The Zoological Society, dedicated to the conservation of endangered species and their habitats, engages in conservation and research work around the globe. The Zoological Society also manages the 100-acre San Diego Zoo and the Center for Reproduction of Endangered Species (CRES), and is working to establish field stations in five key ecological areas worldwide.
