The Towada-Hachimantai National Park has been known by ski bums and locals for decades as one of the premier destinations in Japan for backcountry skiing, with snow depths and quality exceeding even that of the famous snow resorts of Hokkaido. Spanning Aomori, Akita, and Iwate prefectures with dry powder snow, experienced guides, and unique onsen, it’s an all-round spring snow destination within easy reach of Tokyo.
Hakkoda Mountains in Towada-Hachimantai National Park is a wonderful place for skiers looking for untouched, thigh-deep powder. The soft, dry powder holds your weight as you float comfortably down the mountain on a gradual incline.
The Hachimantai Cat Tours takes visitors part way up the mountain, turning what was previously a 3-hour-long trek into a 20-minute ride. This track-type snow plough used for Cat Tours is shared by local guides, with the goal of fostering sustainable tourism with a fixed capacity of tours available.
KEY ATTRACTIONS
- Soak in Legendary Sukayu Onsen: This large ryokan complex is centered around a huge onsen bath, where flowing water from pipes drops down from a height of around three meters. Sit back and let the falling water massage your shoulders and thighs — perfect for soothing muscles spent from skiing.
- Geothermal Power of Matsukawa Onsen: Nourished by hot spring water from 100 meters underground, powered and heated by steam 1,000 meters underground, Matsukawa Onsen was first discovered by mountain ascetics 300 years ago. The outdoor bath is particularly scenic in winter, and the rooms of this environmentally friendly ryokan are directly heated by the steam vent.
- Japan’s Rich Coffee Culture at COFFEEMAN good: Aomori City has a thriving coffee scene, which for decades was expressed in traditional Japanese ‘kissaten’ cafés. Now, with the rise of third-wave coffee emphasizing high-quality beans, many new shops have sprung up to cater to a younger audience. COFFEEMAN good, run by a certified Q Arabica Grader, roasts single-origin coffee beans in-house, and serves traditional as well as inspirational cups of coffee.
- Aomori Nebuta Festival: In early August, one of Japan’s most celebrated summer festival comes to life with a parade of huge floats accompanied by drums, flutes, and dancers. The history and culture of this festival is celebrated daily in the WA RASSE Nebuta Museum, with live performances held right next to an exhibition of floats.
