Simply Sweden, the Scandinavian travel specialist, is launching spectacular ways to embrace the Northern Lights this winter by adding six new holidays to its collection – all of which are exciting yet authentic takes on travelling in the Northern Lights corridor.
Guests will get the rare chance to drive their own teams of huskies on an adventurous three-day journey through the wilderness of the Finnmark Mountain Plateau in northern Norway. Husky Expedition – Finnmark travels beneath the Northern Lights to the vast snow deserts of the Øvre Anarjohka and Stabbursdalen national parks, staying in cabins used by Sami reindeer herders. Prices start at £1,755 per person.
A thrilling Ice Driving adventure is revving up in Arjeplog in Swedish Lapland this winter. The high-octane, three-night weekend includes two full days racing go-karts on a frozen lake used on weekdays by the world's car manufacturers. A layer of ice that can safely carry a load of up to 100 tonnes, will support guests as they whizz around the challenging course under the guidance of a professional instructor. From £2,495 per person.
Whale-watching Tromsø is a three-night trip to see the humpbacks and orcas that fill the waters around the Norwegian city of Tromsø from November to January. Father-and-daughter team Trine and Alf Risvik, who live on Whale Island, are joined by a marine biologist from the local university to offer in-depth knowledge of the Sound and the ocean leviathans that visit each year. The trip also includes an exciting hunt for the Northern Lights. From £950 per adult, £650 per child.
Forest to Mountain opens the gateway to Europe's last great wilderness, Laponia. On this five-night trip, guests check into one of the most extraordinary guesthouses in the world, the Treehotel, to stay in one of the cutting-edge cabins set in the branches of the Boreal Forest. The location, Årrenjärka, is on an historic Sami migration route, and is a great base from which to explore the surrounding mountains on snowmobile and husky rides, learn about Sami life and view the Northern Lights from a sled. From £1,685 per person.
Aurora borealis is the star of Malangen Fjord, a three-night break deep in the Arctic Circle in northern Norway. Snowmobile safaris, ice fishing and snow-shoeing are on the action-packed itinerary at Camp Nikka, a wilderness camp close to the shorefront hotel where guests cosy up at night. From £925 per person.
Finally, limited places are available for the one-off holiday That Christmas Feeling, 19-23 December. Unlike many Christmas market excursions, this four-night trip to the annual winter market in the historic old town of Luleå, offers an authentic taste of the festive season Swedish-style. Plus guests will also learn winter skills, such as how to light a fire in the snow, as well as enjoy husky rides through the Boreal Forest in search of the Northern Lights. From £1,650 per adult, £995 per child.
