Sicily: A Small Island with a Big Attitude

The Wayfarers

The Wayfarers are so smitten by the traditional, unspoilt beauty of Sicily that they offer two unique and contrasting trips to Western and Eastern Sicily on the 2014 schedule. Take both trips and you’ll enjoy a free night in the magical village of Cefalu at the special price of US$7,500 for 13 nights, per person, based on two sharing – a saving of US$890.

Sicily, apparently ‘booted off’ the spike-heeled toe of Italy, is a featherweight in surface area. Twelve Sicilies would fit into mainland Italy, but the island packs a mighty punch to the senses with its colors, food, flavors, antiquity and scenery. And there’s certain rough-around-the-edges charm which is irrestible to The Wayfarers, who above all else, love unspoilt natural beauty and traditional ways of life.

On the Western Sicily Walking Vacation we explore traditional fishing villages including Bonagia and Scopello and the medieval walled town of Erice. We enjoy fabulous walking in the remote peace and beauty of Lo Zingaro and Monte Cofano nature reserves. The Greco Roman antiquities in Sicily are quieter, less well-known but are said to be more plentiful and better preserved than those in Greece. We visit the temple and theatre at Segesta, dating back from the 3rd century BC, the Valley of the Temples at Agrigento and Selinunte. A tasting of marsala wine at the famous Florio winery and an island trip to Mozia complete this rich exploration of the western side of Sicily.

The Wayfarers Eastern Sicily Walking Vacation runs back-to-back to Western Sicily, to offer a fortnight’s immersive trip. On this Walk we hike up Mount Etna, the most active volcano in Europe and one of the most active volcanoes in the world. We enjoy a walking tour of Siracusa, where St Paul preached, plus the famous Greek amphitheatre of Taormina. The Baroque magnificence of Noto is contrasted with wonderful walking across wild, open spaces of coastal marshland and the impressive gorges and canyons of the Reserve of Pantalica.

Throughout the trips, we eat in traditional Sicilian trattorias and restaurants and stay in traditional, characterful and very comfortable local hotels. The Wayfarers Walk Leader and Manager are Italian nationals and experts in the history, geography and wildlife of the region.
