Summer is upon us. If you're planning a “staycation,” short break or that perfect family holiday, there's no better place than the beautiful South of England. Over recent years the region has worked tirelessly to ensure it remains an ideal holiday destination for families. With a multitude of blue flag beaches, great value holiday parks and free festivals and events; the region offers parents and children an unforgettable summer without breaking the bank.
For those families looking to escape the hustle and bustle of city living head to one of the region's enchanting National Parks for a date with nature. The New Forest and The South Downs each offer over 100 miles of dedicated trails, tracks and quiet country lanes; guaranteeing a relaxing, safe and magical environment for cycling, walking or horse riding adventures.
If you do like to be beside the seaside, then the inviting sands of the South promise an unrivalled beach holiday. Thanet in Kent has this month claimed the top spot for the most blue flag beaches in England, closely followed by Poole, Bournemouth and The Isle of Wight. The awards, which recognise cleanliness, safety and high quality amenities, reassure visitors that they can happily and safely build sandcastles and enjoy the sea.
The South's beaches also offer the perfect setting to enjoy the numerous free festivals taking place this summer. Highlights include:
Hastings Pirate Day, 20th July 2014
The seafront and town will be swathed in skull and crossbones for a day of swashbuckling fun and festivities.
Cowes Week, 2-9th August 2014
Visit Cowes on the Isle of Wight at the beginning of August to witness the pretty town come alive as it welcomes 100,000 visitors for the world's largest regatta. Watch the races from the shore or flock to the town to enjoy the festival atmosphere. Sunday 3rd August has also been designated as Family Day at Cowes providing a whole host of free family activities including circus and theatre workshops, an air guitar competition and a cardboard boat race.
Portsmouth International Kite Festival, 23-25th August 2014
Situated on Southsea Common overlooking the Solent with the Isle of Wight in the background the 23rd Portsmouth International Kite Festival will fill the skies above Southsea with a spectacular array of beautiful and colourful kites and inflatables.
Bournemouth Air Festival, 28- 31st August 2014
With four days of incredible aircraft, jets and aerial displays including the infamous Red Arrows, the extravaganza of land, sea and air entertainment promises to thrill and delight every generation.
Alongside the escape and adventure, the South also offers fun opportunities for learning and culture. Discover the ancient city of Rochester, home of England's second oldest cathedral and the magnificent Rochester castle. Or step back in time with a costumed guided tour of the old city, where you'll be led through the historic streets and learn about the beautiful buildings immortalised in Charles Dickens' books.
With award-winning attractions, exceptional beaches and countless free and affordable family events, there has never been a better time to experience family fun in the beautiful South.
