SEE SPAIN IN CHERRY BLOSSOM SEASON

If you visit the Valle del Jerte in Extremadura in South West Spain in late March, you will see over one million cherry trees in blossom covering the mountainsides in swathes of white.  Trujillo Villas Espana, with five restored villas in the Medieval town of Trujillo, is introducing new cherry experiences for their guests to see this local phenomenon, pick cherries and taste the cherry liqueurs and brandy. 

The 70km valley near Caceres is the highest area of Extremadura, and home to around 150 varieties of cherry - the most famous is the Picota cherry, one of the sweetest cherries there is and unique to the area.

Grown in small family farms in a traditional and sustainable manner, the Picota cherry comes with a Denomination of Origin certificate that classifies it as being of the highest quality and coming only from this area of the world.

Trujillo Villas Espana (www.trujillovillasespana.com) is offering guests a private guided drive through the valley with time out to walk along the trails that wind between the cherry trees and villages and take in the beauty of the landscape.  The tours will include views of the cherry blossom in the spring and cherry picking later on in the season, when guests can pick cherries straight from the trees in the traditional way and take home a 2kg box per person.

The area is famous for its cherry liqueur, brandy and marmalade and guests can also visit one of the small plots in the valley and taste different types of cherry brandy and liqueurs.

Prices for a guided three and a half hour private tour of the Valle del Jerte start from £40 per person based on a minimum of two people. The price includes a homemade tapas packed lunch with empanadas and tortilla.

Trujillo is a medieval walled hilltop town overlooking the plains of Extremadura and hour from the Valle del Jerte.  The town was home to several of the 16th century conquistadors, who discovered the Americas and still remains relatively untouched by modernity and tourism.

Stay in the unique Villa Piedras Albas, a restored palace on Trujillo's main square, built in 1530.  The villa has characterful interiors, grand stonework and finely carved beamed ceilings.  A Florentine arched loggia overlooks the square, ideal for al fresco dining and there is also a private walled garden with lemon trees and a swimming pool.  Prices start from £357 per person per week, based on eight people staying.  Or stay in the restored Artist's Studio with contemporary interiors sleeping two from £297 per person per week, based on two sharing.

The excursions are offered by Trujillo Villas Espana in the spring and summer months only. Prices are based on self drive to the Valle del Jerte but return transfers can be organised at a cost of £40 per person.
