(Shenandoah Caverns, Va.) Millions of Americans will watch in awe on New Years Day as the Rose Parade winds sits way through Pasadena, Calif. Now those television viewers can see beautiful floats that are veterans of past Rose Parades just 90 miles from Washington, D.C. at American Celebration on Parade.
Most people watch the Rose Parade on a television screen that cant really show the tremendous size and detail of the fabulous parade floats. The 40,000-square-foot American Celebration on Parade is home to famous parade floats from important national celebrations, including the Rose Parade, and features floats up to 100-feet long and two stories tall. Attraction owner Earl C. Hargrove says, A float can only appear in the Rose Parade once so we bring entire floats or elements from floats back to the East Coast and refurbish them to be used in parades or displayed at American Celebration on Parade. Once youve seen these floats in person, you have a much better appreciation for the floats you see on television. The floats on display have appeared in other parades and national celebrations like Presidential Inaugurals in addition to the Rose Parade so they are a unique part of our history, Mr. Hargrove said. The floats that have appeared in the Rose Parade retain many of the natural coverings such as seeds, nuts, spices and grasses required for the Rose Parade. Some of the Rose Parade veterans on display include a 100-foot-long steam locomotive, tender and passenger car float; whimsical moving polar bears; a 25-foot-tall genie, a mother and baby elephant balancing their 4,000 pound weight on one foot; and two eagles, one nearly 30-feet-tall and the other which has also appeared in four Presidential Inaugural Parades. There are many other Rose Parade veterans that people recognize, including a family of ducks and a huge King Neptune with his sea serpent, Mr. Hargrove said. American Celebration on Parade and Shenandoah Caverns are located just two minutes from I-81, exit 269, five miles north of New Market, Va. The attractions open at 9:00 a.m. every day except Christmas Day. Specific directions and attraction information are available at www.shenandoahcaverns.com or by calling 888-4CAVERN.
