See Former Rose Parade Floats Up Close

Shenandoah Caverns

Millions of Americans will watch in awe on New Years Day as the Rose Parade winds its way through Pasadena, California. Most of the viewers will be watching on a television screen that cant really show the tremendous size and detail of the fabulous floats. Now those television viewers can see beautiful floats that are veterans of past Rose Parades just 100 miles from Washington D.C. at American Celebration on Parade. The 40,000-square-foot exhibition of famous parade floats, props, and settings from important events in Americas entertainment and political history features floats up to 100 feet long and two stories tall. Attraction owner Earl C. Hargrove says, We work with Phoenix Decorating Company which builds most of the floats in the Rose Parade and bring whole floats or elements of large floats back to the East Coast. A float can only appear in the Rose Parade once so we refurbish the floats or props to be used in parades in the East or displayed at American Celebration on Parade. Once youve seen the floats in person, you have a much better appreciation for the floats you see on television. Mr. Hargrove owns a special event, exhibit, trade show, and parade float company near Washington, D.C. in addition to American Celebration on Parade and Shenandoah Caverns in Virginias nearby Shenandoah Valley. The floats on display have appeared in other parades and national celebrations in addition to the Rose Parade so they are a unique part of our history. The floats retain many of the natural coverings such as seeds, nuts, and grasses required for the Rose Parade, he said. Among the Rose Parade veterans are a 100-foot-long steam locomotive, tender, and passenger car float; whimsical moving polar bears; a 25-foot-tall genie; two eagles, one nearly 30-feet-tall and the other which also led President George W. Bushs inaugural parade. These were all award-winning floats when they appeared in the Rose Parade. There are also a family of ducks, a huge King Neptune with his sea serpent, and many more in the exhibition as well, Mr. Hargrove said. American Celebration on Parade and Shenandoah Caverns are located just two minutes from exit 269 of I-81. The attractions open at 9:00 a.m. every day except Christmas Day.
