With more than 100 million visitors since its opening on March 21, 1964, SeaWorld is San Diegos premiere tourist attraction and one of the most popular marine parks in the world. The founding principles of education, entertainment, research and conservation make SeaWorld an ideal place to learn about, enjoy and gain an appreciation for some of the oceans most fascinating animals. Occupying 189 acres on beautiful Mission Bay Park, SeaWorld is known for spectacular animal shows, interactive attractions, aquariums, rides and dining facilities. This year, SeaWorld will offer all the amazing animal interactions, shows and education guests have come to expect, along with a new and exciting thrill ride, Journey To Atlantis.
NEW THIS SEASON
Journey To Atlantis This Memorial Day weekend, SeaWorld San Diego will open the most exciting attraction in its 40-year history: a multimillion dollar project featuring a wet and wild thrill ride, and a new, 130,000-gallon Commersons dolphin habitat. Journey To Atlantis riders board eight-passenger Greek fishing boats for their six-minute adventure that tells the tale of Atlantis through simulated earthquake tremors and floods, and other dazzling special effects, such as projected lights, fog and water cannons. Riders experience thrills and chills again and again, including a splashy, 60-foot plunge into a lake. After their journey to the ancient city, guests enjoy an underwater view of a marine mammal most have never seen: Commersons dolphins.
ADVENTURES The Shamu Adventure features the world-famous killer whale, Shamu, and SeaWorlds entire killer whale family, performing in a million-gallon pool in a stadium that seats 5,500 guests. The current set design features graphics derived from the northwest Indian tribe Tlingits artwork of killer whales and other Alaskan animals. The Shamu Adventure highlights the spectacular natural behaviors of killer whales and the unique relationships that SeaWorld trainers have created with them. Shamu is occasionally joined by Baby Shamu, and they delight guests as they interact with each other, their trainers and several audience volunteers. A Web site linked to the show, www.shamu.com, highlights behaviors of the whales and trainers. R. L. Stines Haunted Lighthouse R.L. Stines Haunted Lighthouse, starring Christopher Lloyd and Lea Thompson, is a spine-tingling adventure about a sister and brother on summer vacation, who dare to discover the truth about the legend of a haunted lighthouse. This thrilling 4-D film combines state-of-the-art visual effects with multi-sensory surprises. Pets Rule! Where else but SeaWorld can you get nose-to-nose with a polar bear, eye-to-eye with a dolphin and head-to-head with your favorite pet. Pets Rule! is a zany show where more than 150 pets including clever canines, curious cats, beautiful birds and unpredictable pigs take charge and show humans whos the boss. Cirque de la Mer is a summer show in which a variety of colorful Amphibians, a combination of humans and sea creatures, visit SeaWorld and demonstrate their super-human abilities. A Zorb, the Amphibian form of transportation, allows the half-human, half-sea creatures to travel and perform, both on land, water, and in the air.
Fools With Tools features California sea lions Clyde and Seamore vying for the right to be the master handyman and one true star of their cable-TV, home repair show. Sea Lion and Otter Stadium has been transformed into a television studio, and the audience watches as these two compete for star billing. The laughs are nonstop when mischief-making Asian small-clawed otters enter the scene and ruin Clyde and Seamores best-laid plans by stealing the all-important contract and causing havoc on the set.
Shipwreck Rapids takes castaways on an adventure in nine-passenger inner tubes in the hope of returning to civilization. Passengers encounter raging rapids, roaring waterfalls, sunbathing sea turtles, a near collision with a ships propeller and a dark, forbidding tunnel that takes lost travelers through the interior of a ships engine room. At journeys end, castaways can relax and satisfy their appetites at Shipwreck Reef Caf, where trainers and animals mingle with guests. Wild Arctic, one of SeaWorlds most popular attractions, takes guests on a journey to the frozen North. Getting there is half the fun. Visitors board a simulated jet helicopter for an exhilarating ride with real bumps, jumps and thrills. Disembarking guests find a realistic arctic research station that brings them face to face with beluga whales, polar bears, walruses, seals and, occasionally, an arctic fox. Guests feel arctic temperatures as they pass through Wild Arctics ice tunnel, complete with foggers, misters, simulated snow and a 25-foot-long ice wall.
Dolphin Discovery showcases SeaWorlds family of bottlenose dolphins and pilot whales in a splashy, high-energy show with some surprise comic moments. A volunteer family right out of the audience gets involved in the fun and gets an up close and personal introduction to these amazing animals.
Shark Encounter takes SeaWorld guests underwater with sharks, rays and tropical fish. The 280,000-gallon attraction features a 57-foot acrylic tube running the length of the sharks habitat. Sand tiger, bonnethead, blacktip and whitetip sharks are among the species living in this popular attraction.
Penguin Encounter features more than 350 penguins representing six antarctic and sub-antarctic species. Guests get a close-up look at these delightful animals as they swim and waddle in the 25-degree, snow-filled habitat. The Penguin Encounter also is home to a lively group of arctic birds: tufted puffins and common murres. Warm-weather Magellanic penguins, a species native to Chile and Argentina, live outside the Penguin Encounter.
Shamus Happy Harbor, a 2-acre, colorful adventure playland, features more than 20 interactive attractions to thrill young SeaWorld guests. Net crawls, an air bounce, jumping fountains, slippery slides, a 2-story funship and a wet water maze are a few of the entertaining activities SeaWorlds young guests can explore.
Freshwater Aquarium and Aquarium de la Mer each have about two dozen displays, with aquariums as large as 8,000 gallons featuring tropical, cold-water and fish species native to the waters off Southern California. SeaWorlds aquariums feature an up-close look at hundreds of species of fish and other ocean creatures and plants. World of the Sea Aquarium features tropical, schooling and Southern California fishes in four 36,000- to 52,000-gallon habitats. A special white sea bass display contains about 60 adult fish that are part of the brood stock from the Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institutes ground-breaking aquaculture project.
Anheuser-Busch Hospitality Center emphasizes the rich history of SeaWorlds parent company with an attraction that features a restaurant, gift shop, beer sampling, information center, Budweiser Beer School and Clydesdale Hamlet. The Hamlet is home to several world-famous Budweiser Clydesdale horses along with Dalmatians, the traditional dogs of the hitch. Guests 21 and older may sample quality Anheuser-Busch products including Budweiser, Bud Light, Michelob, Michelob Ultra and Bacardi Silver. Summer nights featuring Mystique de la Mer, scheduled weekends only beginning May 29 through June 12 and daily June 19 through Labor Day, features extended park hours, live music and special nighttime animal shows. The sea creatures from the magical underwater world of Atlantis come out at night for Mystique de la Mer, featuring gymnastics, aerial performances and more. Stay late at the Main Gate for fireworks and SeaWorlds grand finale, Ocean FantaSea, an ensemble show featuring Mystique cast members performing to live music. As the sun sets over Mission Bay this summer, SeaWorld is transformed like never before.
Club SeaWorld Presented by Pepsi is back for the fifth year, making SeaWorld the hip place for the teen crowd once again this summer. Club SeaWorld presents up-and-coming and national musical acts. Teens can dance to their favorite songs, get autographs, play games and see a spectacular fireworks show every Thursday night, July 8 through Aug. 26 at the parks Main Gate Plaza. And, back again this year is Club SeaWorld Superstar, a weekly talent contest for incredible prizes. For more information visit www.clubseaworld.com. ANIMAL INTERACTIONS SeaWorlds Trainer for a Day program allows guests to learn firsthand how SeaWorld trainers care for, train and build relationships with killer whales, dolphins and other animals. Each Trainer for a Day participant dons a wet suit and shadows a SeaWorld animal trainer for a seven-hour work shift. The program includes an educational introduction to SeaWorlds training methods, show preparation, training sessions with dolphins and killer whales, and a highlight for many the opportunity to enter the water with a trainer and interact with a dolphin.
Since the program is an up-close intimate experience, only three guests at a time can be SeaWorld Trainers for a Day. Participants must be at least 13. The cost is $395 and includes lunch and a souvenir T-shirt; $295 for Silver and Platinum Passport members. Each guest can bring an observer with them at the cost of $125. For more information and reservations call the Trainer for a Day hotline toll free at (877) 436-5746.
Shamu Close Up offers unparalleled views of Shamu and companions as they swim, play and socialize. With specially designed observation decks and a panoramic underwater viewing gallery, the opportunities for close-up observation of these magnificent marine mammals are unsurpassed.
Rocky Point Preserve is a two-part attraction that allows guests to see and learn more about bottlenose dolphins and California sea otters. Guests can feed the dolphins at specified times each day and look through underwater viewing panels to see the animals surfing and frolicking. Nearby, sea otters forage for shrimp and clams and play with enrichment toys in their pool. Surrounding the animal habitat, colorful and interactive graphics invite guests to touch and explore a life-size dolphin model, larger-than-life dolphin and porpoise teeth, killer whale and sea otter jaw models and sea otter fur. Interactive elements allow guests to guess how much a sea otter eats, how many hairs make up their pelt and what other ocean animals eat.
Dolphin Interaction Program (DIP) was created for guests who want to enter the water with these beautiful animals. Participants learn about bottlenose dolphin anatomy, training and husbandry in a 30-minute class and then enter the dolphins habitat for 20-25 minutes to feed, touch and even give the animals cues for trained behaviors. Program fees are $140 ($105 for SeaWorld Silver or Platinum Passport members). Program fees do not include park admission. Advance registration is recommended. For more information and reservations call (877) 436-5746. Dine With Shamu is more than just a dining experience its an up-close adventure with the star of SeaWorld. Shipwreck Reef Caf is an interactive dining experience in which exotic tropical birds, birds of prey and otters visit with guests as they dine throughout five themed areas around Shipwreck Island. This specially themed restaurant offers fresh-grilled seafood, vegetables, meats, desserts and more. Forbidden Reef treats guests to underwater caverns where they find themselves face to face with hundreds of mysterious moray eels. At the surface, graceful bat rays glide by in a shallow lagoon, lingering just long enough for guests to stroke their velvety skin or offer them a piece of squid.
California Tide Pool guests can reach below the surface to touch prickly sea urchins and pick up live sea stars. Guests discover fascinating animals like sea anemones, sea hares and hermit crabs. Park educators are on hand to answer questions and share information about the fascinating animals of the intertidal zone. Seal and Sea Lion Exhibit features California sea lions and harbor seals, where guests can feed the marine mammals fish.
ENVIRONMENTAL SeaWorlds Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program is an important part of the parks commitment to conservation, research and education. The programs objective is to return rehabilitated animals to the wild. Through this program, SeaWorlds mammal, bird and fish specialists have rescued, treated, sheltered, rehabilitated and released thousands of ill, injured and stranded animals. With an average 200 rescues per year, nearly 65 percent of the animals rescued are successfully rehabilitated and returned to the wild. Marine species treated by the SeaWorld team include sea turtles, pelicans, seabirds, whales, dolphins, seals, sea lions and sea otters.
Manatee Rescue is one of only three U.S. locations outside Florida displaying the endangered Florida manatee. Several rescued and rehabilitated manatees live in this fascinating attraction. More than 800 square feet of underwater viewing offers an unparalleled view of manatees as they swim, rest, eat and interact. SeaWorlds Garden of Discovery features fun and interactive activities for the entire family.
Home gardeners, horticulturists and wildlife enthusiasts can discover how they might recreate some of SeaWorlds gardening magic in their own backyards. Adults visiting this beautiful garden also will enjoy a butterfly, bird and bee garden, horticulture demonstrations and a self-guided tour. Children will delight in an underground peek at a worms life, exploring garden tools, a bees-eye-view of plant pollination and even digging for fossils. SeaWorlds award-winning gardens are in bloom year-round. With approximately 40 acres of landscaping in the 189-acre adventure park, guests are sure to enjoy SeaWorlds spectacular plant collection.
SeaWorlds Oiled Wildlife Care Center is an example of a successful private and public partnership dedicated to environmental stewardship. This facility employs lessons learned from past oil spills, improvements in wildlife rescue, care and rehabilitation. When not being used for oil spill response, the 8,000-square-foot complex houses ill or injured animals in SeaWorlds Animal Rescue and Rehabilitation Program.
Hubbs-SeaWorld Research Institute, which is located on Mission Bay just west of SeaWorld, is a public, non-profit organization dedicated to providing solutions to conflicts that arise between human activity and the natural world. Hubbs-SeaWorld's scientists apply sophisticated technologies to seek the solutions that protect and conserve marine animals while benefiting humans and their reliance on marine resources.
Research at the Institute focuses on rare, endangered and threatened species and habitats, on depleted fishery resources and on the ecology of marine animals and biological diversity.
Founded in 1963 to conduct research in the tradition of Milton C. Shedd, one of the visionary founders of SeaWorld San Diego, and world-renowned scientists, Carl L. and Laura C. Hubbs, its charter has always been: to return to the sea some measure of the benefits derived from it. Access to SeaWorld's extensive marine zoological collection and superb facilities are unique assets as they provide the Institute with unparalleled opportunities for scientific studies. It also allows, for the first time, SeaWorld and Busch Gardens guests to contribute to the parks efforts to preserve endangered wildlife, support worthy conservation and research organizations worldwide, and to aid ill, orphaned, injured or stranded animals.
Visitors to all nine Anheuser-Busch Adventure Parks may donate to the fund at more than 35 park gift shops and other outlets. For more information visit www.swbg-conservationfund.org.
