Scotland's Leading Activity Cruise Company Adds State-Of-The-Art Barge To Its Fleet

Caledonian Discovery

Scotland’s leading activity cruise company has doubled its capacity for 2014 with the addition of a fantastic new 44m barge to its fleet. Ros Crana  (pictured) is Caledonian Discovery’s newest barge and comes fully-equipped with en-suite accommodation and all the equipment – canoes, mountain bikes and even three sail boats, including a 16ft cruising dinghy – required for the company’s range of exciting active breaks in the Scottish Highlands.

Caledonian Discovery is a leading provider of active breaks based around Scotland’s Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and the Great Glen Way with the unique twist that as guests travel through some of Scotland’s most stunning landscape on foot, bicycle or canoe, their accommodation travels with them!

There is no better way to experience the wonderful Caledonian Canal and Great Glen Way than on an active break, staying aboard one of Caledonian Discovery’s all-inclusive staffed barges, Fingal of Caledonia or Ros Crana. After an exhilarating day of cycling or walking the Great Glen, canoeing the Caledonian Canal, or perhaps experiencing the very best of Scottish wildlife up close with Caledonian Discovery’s resident expert on its Wildlife & Sea Lochs cruises, guests return to the barge each night to home-cooked meals using only the freshest ingredients, share stories of their adventures and make plans for the following day before retiring to en-suite cabins to prepare for the next day’s activities. What could be better?

Each of Caledonian Discovery’s barges have en-suite cabins and generously proportioned public areas, including a dining table which seats 18 and comfortable lounge area, a fully-stocked bar and ample space on deck for relaxing, sun-bathing or watching the stunning Highland scenery and wildlife go by.

Caledonian Discovery offers an exciting range of active breaks to suit all – from families to groups of friends or individual travelers – with cruises traveling either east to west (from Inverness to Banavie) or west to east on the return route.

Some of Caledonian Discovery’s most popular active cruises include: Canoe the Great Glen – a seven-day cruise that sees guests paddle 12 miles per day through unforgettable scenery with a qualified instructor; Walk the Great Glen – a fantastic 78 mile coast-to-coast walk with a toe dipping ceremony at either end; and Classic Cruise – a fantastic six-night journey along the entire length of the Caledonian Canal with opportunity to try all the activities on offer or just sit back, enjoy the journey and watch the world go by.

Editor’s notes:

* All of Caledonian Discovery’s cruise holidays with activities are based on the Caledonian Canal, Loch Ness and the west coast sea lochs. The famous Great Glen Way closely follows the route of the Caledonian Canal, built in the early 19th century linking the east and west coasts via large inland lochs including Loch Ness.

 * The Great Glen Way follows this waterway, sometimes right alongside the water and other times further away above the lochs and canals. In every section the views can be wonderful with majestic mountains, large expanses of open water, smaller atmospheric lochs and pretty canal sections. All this ensures a wide variety of interesting scenery throughout the trip and a mixture of terrain from towpath to ancient roads and forest tracks.
