You are never more than a few minutes away from miles of soft-sandy beaches and rolling dunes in Grand Haven on the Eastern border of Lake Michigan, which makes the area a mecca for water sports. Take it easy with a bit of tubing and kayaking or go for a bit of a challenge with stand-up paddleboarding. In Michigan's Upper Peninsula you will find plenty of family friendly activities. There's all kinds of outdoor activities like hiking, biking, open water swimming, canoeing and kayaking. Take a relaxing trip in a kayak down the Manistique River or for something more strenuous try a 6 hour canoe trip down the AuTrain River.

Adventure through green forests and long sandy beaches on the Keweenaw Peninsula, the most northerly part of Michigan's Upper Peninsula. Hire a bike and head up to Copper Harbor, which has one of the best mountain bike trails in the world. Be sure to look up as you ride for some incredible views of the area, pick from easy, moderate and difficult tracks along the way.

Less than an hour north of Detroit in Waterford, Michigan is award winning Waterford Oaks Waterpark. The family fun park features a tropical wave pool, with palm trees, a designated young children area including waterfalls and tipping buckets and no waterpark would be complete without Ragin' Rapids, a group raft ride splashing down three stories of water. Other family attractions nearby include the Detroit Zoo and Sea Life Michigan.

Holland is one of Michigan's best Beachtowns, with both Lake Michigan and Lake Macatawa providing plenty of fun for swimmers, kayakers and sailors. But the jewel in the crown of Holland, in West Michigan, has to be Big Red, Michigan's most photographed lighthouse. For the best view of Big Red, visit the Holland State Park where you can walk along the board walk to the north pier.

Traverse City is a popular destination during the summer with families. The crystal clear waters of Grand Traverse Bay and the area's many inland lakes are perfect for waterskiing, jet skiing, tubing, kayaking and canoeing. For children there are also plenty of frisbee and volleyball tournaments on the beaches to get involved in, and many sandcastles to be built. While in the area, you won't want to miss a chance to experience Sleeping Bear Sand Dunes National Lakeshore with some of the tallest freshwater dunes in the world.
