Savour The 'Best Of British' At Amberley Castle's St. George's Day Dinner

Amberley Castle

Come and enjoy the award-winning fruits of the English vine at Amberley Castle's St George's Day celebrations. The opportunity to savour the recent success of England's vineyards over a gourmet four-course Cellar Secrets dinner will take place on Sunday 23 April. The baronial polished oak floors, tapestries, weaponry and suits of armour, which sit within the mighty stone walls of this 900 year-old quintessential English castle, make it the ideal venue in which to honour our patron saint. Just as Henry V's army at Agincourt were far outnumbered, so the English wine-making industry is dwarfed by the prolific production of its well-established French counterparts. Once again England looks to St. George for inspiration and believes that quality will conquer over quantity in the battle of the vineyards. The opening of Amberley Castle's sister hotel, Abbaye de la Bussire in the heart of Burgundy, France in early March makes this patriotic celebration particularly poignant. St George roused the English to many historic victories over our beloved cross-channel neighbours in the past, so what better way to celebrate his saint's day than by issuing a challenge to the French on their own terms - wine making. The Abbaye will respond in kind on Bastille Day in July, but will really have to 'pop the corks' to match Amberley Castle's proud celebrations! Amberley's Cellar Secret dinner evening will commence at 7pm with a reception in the Courtroom, followed by a sumptuous dinner of traditional fayre in the Great Room. The wine list for the evening includes a sparkling wine from the award-winning Nyetimber Vineyard, which enjoyed royal approval as the favoured tipple of the late Queen Mother. Also featured are a crisp Lamberhurst Fum, an oaky Rondo Reserve 2001, a Somerset Royal Cider Brandy and sweet Nectar dessert wine from Chapel Down Vineyard. Chapel Down's wines are served in the House of Commons and at British embassies around the world, reflecting the government's drive to promote national pride. Jason Busby, a director of English Wines Group and Maxine Silsby, Amberley Castle's general manager, will host the evening offering top wine-tasting tips to ensure that guests enjoy the full flavours of the delicious English wines. Places at this sumptuous dinner are priced at 75 per person, with an exclusive overnight rate of 110 per room available to guests participating in the St George's Day celebrations.
