Luxury safari specialists Sanctuary Retreats has announced the opening of a brand new property - the exclusive Sanctuary Tambarare in Kenya's Laikipia County - in July 2020. This beautiful new camp, with just 10 luxury canvas tents, is a peaceful haven, nestled amongst fever trees in the shadow of Mount Kenya and will offer the perfect balance of wildlife, adventure, luxury and relaxation. With exceptional wildlife viewing beyond the 'Big Five', the area is home to giraffe, gazelle, zebra, cheetah, jackal and hyena, as well as the largest population of black rhino in East Africa and the world's last two white rhinos.
Named after the Swahili word meaning 'plains', Sanctuary Tambarare overlooks the grassy plateau of the Ol Pejeta Conservancy, some 90,000 acres of unspoilt African landscape and home to the highest density of wildlife in Kenya outside the Maasai Mara.
Beyond the camp, Ol Pejeta Conservancy is home to an extraordinary concentration of wildlife. Alongside the twice-daily game viewing activities, the area offers unique wildlife experiences including a rhino encounter with the last two northern white rhino on earth, lion tracking with rangers, morning or evening horse rides alongside rhino and zebra, an all-day adventure cycling safari. Fitness fans can even join a run on a 7km route across the Ol Pejeta plains. There are also thrilling night game drives, when the plains come to life with nocturnal animals, something which is not possible in most of Kenya's national parks and reserves.
After an action-packed day out on safari in this stunning wildlife retreat, the new tented camp offers up a tranquil haven that perfectly reflects its surroundings. Spacious and airy, the 10 luxurious canvas tents all have their own private verandas overlooking the spectacular landscape and grassy plains beyond. Interiors - which are in a boutique-meets-bush style -will feature comfortable super-king beds and ensuites with walk-in showers as well as teak floors and Maasai-inspired art in traditional blue, representing the sky and precious rainwater.
At the centre of this secluded camp is a spacious canopied main tent with an inviting lounge area and bar tent with loungers offering the perfect setting overlooking the boma from its deck. At Sanctuary Tambarare's restaurant, guests can enjoy a range of delicious dishes, salads and freshly baked breads, all prepared in camp by a team of experienced chefs. Evenings can be spent gathered by the traditional fire pit, the ideal spot for a sundowner whilst exchanging stories under starry skies and listening to fascinating tales of wildlife encounters from the camp's passionate safari guides.
Commenting on the new camp, Pieter van der Schee, Global Director Sales & Marketing for Sanctuary Retreats said, “We are delighted to announce this new camp, which increases the number of African camps and lodges in our portfolio to 13. Sanctuary Tambarare, which is easily accessible from Nairobi, will complement our other Kenyan property, the award-winning Sanctuary Olonana, and a combination of the two makes for the perfect Kenyan adventure where guests can enjoy Sanctuary Retreats' customary 'luxury, naturally' style. Bookings are open for the camp from Monday 10 February.”
Sanctuary Tambarare Camp will open on 1st July 2020. Prices start from £220 per person per night based on two people sharing for a minimum 4 night stay including all meals and drinks (excluding premium brands), two daily shared game viewing activities and return transfers to and from the airstrip to the camp. Cost excludes park fees, Ol Pejeta activities, Tourism Development levy and international/domestic flights. To book visit www.sanctuaryretreats.com.
