Countdown has Begun for Super Bowl 50 in the San Francisco Bay Area

The clock is ticking for Super Bowl 50 on Feb. 7, 2016 and big changes are underway.

Since May 21, 2013, the day it was announced that the Bay Area had won the right to host Super Bowl 50, civic leaders, the Bay Area hospitality community and NFL staff and owners have been working to create a Super Bowl that not only celebrates the golden anniversary of the largest annual sporting event in the world, but also marks the beginning of a new era.

To quote NFL Network's Albert Breer, “San Francisco will set the stage for the next 50 Super Bowls.”

The Super Bowl is more than a game; there will be a full week of events in advance of the game. The NFL Experience, pro football's interactive theme park, will be held in San Francisco at Moscone Center and the Media Center will be housed in Moscone West. The Super Bowl Fan Village, which is expected to host one million fans during Super Bowl Week, will also be located in San Francisco, with its specific location to be announced in early April.

This is the first Super Bowl to be held in the San Francisco Bay Area since Super Bowl XIX in January 1985, and signals the return to the state where the Super Bowl all began

The San Francisco Bay Area Super Bowl 50 Host Committee has pledged that this will be the “most giving” Super Bowl ever, with 25 percent of every dollar they raise to be invested in Bay Area nonprofits through the 50 Fund, its philanthropic arm.

It will promises to be the most connected Super Bowl fueled by Host Committee partners such as Intel, Apple, Yahoo, Google and more, as well as the game being hosted in Levi's Stadium – home to the San Francisco 49ers – which is the most technologically advanced NFL stadium in the country.

Fans are dubbing this the “Golden Super Bowl” because of California's “Golden State” nickname; the San Francisco 49ers, named after miners who came to California during the Gold Rush in 1849, and the traditional “golden anniversary” designation for 50 years.

The Bay Lights Go Dark in March 2015, Come on for Good in 2016

San Francisco has become a national leader in light art.  No recent development underscores this more strongly than the news that The Bay Lights, the world's largest LED light sculpture, will become a permanent icon on the city's landscape.

Since its debut on March 5, 2013, the vertical cables of the Bay Bridge's western span (also known as the Willie L. Brown Jr. Bridge) have come to life nightly with 25,000 LED lights “performing” in patterns created by light artist Leo Villareal.

The two-year installation by artist Villareal ended on March 6, 2015 and the sculpture will be removed to allow Caltrans to perform maintenance on the bridge cables. Illuminate the Arts has successfully raised $4 million in private funds to pay for new equipment and re-installation, so The Bay Lights will be re-installed in time to shine for Super Bowl 50 in February 2016.   Once the light sculpture is returned to the bridge, the artwork will be gifted to the State of California for ongoing stewardship. Learn more at http://thebaylights.org/about/.   Media contact:  Tami Kelly, Brazer Communications, tami@brazercommunications.com, 925-640-9997.

San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA) to Reopen at More Than Double Original Size in 2016

A major expansion is underway at the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art (SFMOMA), which has embodied bold vision and innovation from its founding in 1935 to the 1995 opening of its Mario Botta-designed building.

With more than 30,000 works, SFMOMA has built definitive collections in painting and sculpture, photograph, architecture and design, and media arts, including significant examples of the art of the Bay Area and California. The

SFMOMA collection is internationally recognized and continues to grow.

In 2016, SFMOMA will reinvent itself yet again by more than doubling its current capacity for the presentation of art, providing almost six times as much public space as the current building.

The centerpiece of SFMOMA's expansion is the remarkable building design developed in collaboration with the architectural firm Snøhetta. The approximately 235,000-square-foot expansion will seamlessly join the existing building.

One of the catalysts for the expansion is the addition of the Doris and Donald Fisher Collection, one of the greatest private collections of contemporary art in the world.  Learn more at www.sfmoma.orgMedia contacts: Clara Hatcher, 415-357-4177 chatcher@sfmoma.org and Jill Lynch, 415-357-4172, jilynch@sfmoma.org.

Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) Reopened after $1.3 Million Renovation

The Museum of the African Diaspora (MoAD) is one of the few museums in the world focused on African Diaspora culture and on presenting the rich cultural art works of the people of Africa and of African descendant cultures around the world.  MoAD recently was chosen as a Smithsonian Affiliate and now has access to the Smithsonian Institution's collection of 136 million artifacts for research, exhibits and programming.

MoAD reopened in December, 2014, after a $1.3 million renovation with added gallery space, a more open layout for the ground floor and lobby, a redesigned museum store, and an upgrade to all of its technology including interactive iPad kiosks in the lobby and a new website.

Situated in the heart of the Yerba Buena Arts District in San Francisco, also home of the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, MoAD is actively engaged in building a community that inspires, educates and connects people of all ages and backgrounds. MoAD seeks to build a deeper understanding of the African Diaspora through art, programs and events that cultivate wonder and excitement about the ways in which our personal histories are connected. As a nonprofit organization, the museum's operations and programs are supported by grants and contributions from public and private sources.  To learn more, visit www.moadsf.orgMedia contact: K.S. The Yard at Mission Rock Pop-Up Village at Giants Parking Lot A

The pop-up shipping container village called The Yard at Mission Rock opened in March 2015, featuring popular homegrown tenants such as Anchor Brewing, Off the Grid and Peet's Coffee & Tea and is supported by Bank of America.   Open every day, year-round, The Yard activates a small portion of Giants Parking Lot A, at the corner of Third Street and Terry Francois Boulevard.  The pop-up village is constructed out of recycled shipping containers that house local food and drink establishments, pop-up shops, public open space, cultural programing and events.  The Yard will remain in place until 2017, possibly longer, and serves as a gathering place for those who live and work in the South Beach and Mission Bay neighborhoods.  The Yard gives surrounding neighbors the opportunity to experience the future Mission Rock neighborhood on a smaller scale.  Nestled between the maturing South Beach neighborhood and the emerging Mission Bay neighborhood, the Mission Rock district will be an exciting, new, common ground for San Franciscans.  Mission Rock will feature a spectacular waterfront park, a diverse mixed-use neighborhood that includes hundreds of new rental housing units, offices and homegrown retailers grouped along a network of green streets, public plazas and promenades.  For more information, visit www.theyardsf.com. Urban Wineries Thriving in San Francisco

Although San Francisco is surrounded by some of the most renowned wine regions in the world, visitors no longer have to venture outside the city limits to taste outstanding wines.  California's lush vineyards produce the fruit that becomes magic in a bottle at makers such as Bluxome Street Winery, www.bluxomewinery.com, and Dogpatch Wine Works, www.dogpatchwineworks.com.   On Treasure Island, a former Navy base, WinerySF, http://winery-sf.com, and others are perfecting their enology and welcoming visitors for tastings, tours and even grape stomping events.  Winemaker Studios on Treasure Island won the Great Wine Capitals' Best of Wine Tourism Award for Innovative Tourism Experiences, http://greatwinecapitals.com/best-of/san-francisco-napa-valley/winemaker-studios-0. One of their tasting rooms is in a former submarine training facility.   Visitors can play bocce, sip wine, and drink in great views of the new Bay Bridge.  Urban winery tours are available through companies such as Walk SF Tours, www.walksftours.com.

Speakeasy, Drink Well

The Prohibition Era of the 1920s and '30s did little but amplify San Francisco's frisky spirit.  Speakeasy bars were hidden (or sometimes not so hidden) throughout the city.  Today, speakeasy culture is celebrated at places like Bourbon & Branch, Slide and Elixer.  Cocktails have been elevated to the foodie spectrum with “mixologists” making their own ingredients and classic drinks coming back to life.  This is fueled in part by the city's spirited craft distilleries such as Distillery No. 209, Seven Stills and Anchor Distilling Co. It's all very San Francisco.  Learn more at www.sanfrancisco.travel/article/bay-areas-best-craft-distilleries and http://www.sanfrancisco.travel/article/history-speakeasies-and-where-get-throwback-cocktail-san-francisco
