If you're looking for epic, then look no further. Four ocean voyages and over 100 days of sailing adventure. The stakes don't get much bigger. Sail from Hoorn in the Netherlands to Cape Horn in southern Chile in the autumn of 2014. This amazing opportunity allows you to join one, two, three, or ALL FOUR legs of this tall ship ocean voyage. Experience not necessary, passion for adventure a must.
The ship is making her way to the Southern Hemisphere and the adventure is divided into four distinct legs which range from 12 to 46 days each (total voyage 100 days).
The voyage is in commemoration of the 400th year anniversary of the discovery of Cape Horn in 1615 and 1616 which was a secret mission sponsored by some wealthy merchants to find an alternative route to the East, when the known routes were all claimed by the Dutch East India Company.
You are the crew on this spectacular adventure.
You'll have plenty of time to come to know the ins and out of the ship as well as your fellow trainees – who will feel like family in no time at all. You don't need any prior sailing experience to enjoy this voyage to the fullest. Prepare to take in a transatlantic and a rounding of Cape Horn!
The tall ship serves as a training vessel which means you will learn all that you need to know as you go. It's a hands on adventure in every sense of the word. If you do have prior experience on tall ships or yachts, then polish off those sea legs and join us.
Choose your leg (or legs):
- Voyage Leg 1: The journey to Patagonia in the south of Chile begins with a 15 day sail from Hoorn in the Netherlands to Lisbon (Cascais) in Portugal.
- Voyage Leg 2: The second leg is a 12 day leg which will take the voyage crew from Lisbon to the pristine Spanish Canary Island port of Tenerife. It's here that preparations for the Transatlantic crossing will be made.
- Voyage Leg 3: This leg begins on October 5. You will set sail for a fantastic 28 day voyage across the Atlantic Ocean – sailing from Tenerife to Salvador, Brazil.
- Voyage Leg 4: From Salvador you will undertake an epic 46 days down the coast of Brazil to Punta Arenas in southern Chile.
Leg three has the bonus of crossing the equator and leg four promises an attempt to round the famous Cape Horn from east to west. Joining the crew, participating in the sailing, and helping to run the tall ship is a major part of the on board experience. You'll get a real taste of life at sea. Participation depends on your interest level and your physical condition. If you want to be challenged, you will be. If you want to have the adventure of a lifetime, you will.
Participants can choose to do one or more of the voyage legs and a great deal is available for those salty seadogs want to take part in the full 100 day adventure.

VOYAGE NOTES
Leg 1: Hoorn, Netherlands – Lisbon (Cascais), Portugal
This is the official start of the Hoorn to Cape Horn voyage. You'll be met by typical Dutch ships which will bring you and your fellow trainees to the tall ship. The ship will be waiting near the Island of Texel in the north of the Netherlands. In the old days this was the most common way to get to the sea going ships. Historically these ships we waiting here for crew, cargo and good weather before leaving the Netherlands. When all crew is on board we will hoist the sails and will start our adventure.

This real ocean crossing brings you a short stop on one of the Cape Verde Islands and many days at sea! During the crossing King Neptune visits the ship and turns all pollywogs into real shellbacks. Keep in mind that during this voyage maintenance is being done as preparations for the colder climate by the permanent crew and will be noticeable at times.

An attempt for a Cape Horn rounding from east to west. We are searching for brave trainees who are willing to accept this challenge! General information
Embarkation/disembarkation times: Embarkation is at 17h00 on the embarkation dates mentioned. One exception is embarkation in Hoorn, Netherlands which is is at 09h00 AM. Disembarkation for all voyages is at 09h00 AM on the disembarkation date. This is after breakfast.
All fares mentioned are per person and including all meals on board, coffee and tea. The fare excluding drinks at the bar, travel and cancellation insurance and transfer to and from the ship (with the exception of the voyage starting in Hoorn).
THE SHIP
The vessel is registered as a sail training tall ship and as such you will be mustered as voyage crew. This means that, more so than on a passenger ship, you will get extensive safety instructions and we ask you to join in the watch system.
Participating in sailing and running the tall ship is part of the overall experience on board. The level of participation will depend on your interest and physical condition. On deck you work together with the permanent crew. The watch system consists of joining the permanent crew for 4 hours, after which you will be off for 8 hours.
NO SAILING EXPERIENCE NEEDED
Everyone is welcome to take the helm, set sails, assist with manoeuvres, navigation, weather observations, furling the sails on the yards and much more. The permanent crew will give lectures and instruct you during the voyage in steering, navigation and line handling.
This will be done in a “Dutch” style, so without yelling, blowing whistles and so on. Also, you will find no uniforms on board!
Crossing the ocean properly with a square rigger under sail like this tall ship is a team effort, so we appreciate every input from the voyage crew. Sailing experience is not necessary. Instructions will be given in watch responsibilities, basic sail theory, line handling, steering and navigation.
TEAMWORK
One hour on board and it will instantly be clear: “teamwork” has to be the key to this beautiful traditional sailing vessel. No winches, but an infinity of lines; at first glance maybe a complete jungle. The hundreds of blocks look like spiders in their webs. The novice sailor will be introduced to these matters every day and, after a few weeks, all those lines, blocks, stays, booms with their impossible names and functions become an open book.
VARIOUS PLACES FOR RELAXING
The ship is ideal for ocean crossings and longer voyages, with various places for relaxing: library, lounge, poker corner and deckhouse. These different areas allow you to do your own thing: perhaps some quiet reading or a more active role in the social life in the deckhouse. The ship is equipped with a DVD player, a CD player, i-Pod connection and radio. There are four 2-person cabins, four 4-person cabins and four 6-person cabins. The comfortable cabins each have an en-suite toilet and shower.
MEALS ON BOARD
An experienced cook and cook's assistant will prepare three meals a day. The general meal times on board are:
Breakfast: 07:00 – 09:00
Lunch: 13:00
Dinner: 19:00
Coffee and tea: 10:00, 14:00, 16:00, 20:00
Baking of bread and cookies is done at night.
At sea, midnight snacks are prepared, usually during the dog watch (24:00-04:00)
HISTORY
The ship was built in 1911 at the Stulcken shipyard in Hamburg, at the request of the city of Hamburg. The ship was put into service as a lightship on the river Elbe, and later worked as a stand-by vessel. In 1986 the ship was brought to the Netherlands. Over a period of 8 years, she was completely rebuilt and rigged as a three-masted bark.
The rebuilding and conversion to a sailing vessel was carried out under the supervision of the Dutch Shipping Inspection, Bureau Veritas and Register Holland. She sails with worldwide certificates from each of these authorities and she complies with the highest requirements for sailing ships.
