Luxury hostel brand, Safestay, announces the addition of a second property to its growing portfolio of luxury hostels across the UK. Safestay York, located in Micklegate House in the city centre, is an impressive Grade I listed Georgian building originally designed by the famous architect John Carr of York, and described as the most important Georgian residence south west of the River Ouse.
Currently undergoing refurbishment, although still open for business, Safestay York will officially re-launch in August 2014 as the sister property to the award-winning London-based Safestay Elephant & Castle.
The 160-bed hostel will feature bunk-bed dorms, en-suite facilities as well as private double and twin en-suite rooms. As with Safestay Elephant & Castle, Safestay York will be designed by Black Box Interiors and will focus on preserving the many original features of the historic building whilst creating bright and light communal spaces for the hostel's broad community of guests – from school groups and families, to business and leisure travellers.
Stand-out features of Safestay York include the original 18th century stone-flagged entrance hall and the sweeping staircase with its superb carved balusters sweeping in front of a magnificent arched window, and the stunning rococo ceiling featuring Shakespeare's head, believed to have been created by the renowned Italian artist Cortese. All of these features will be preserved during the refurbishment programme.
The rooms will feature comfortable bunk beds and lockers to secure luggage and personal items. Entry to the rooms will be by touch key. There will be a well-equipped laundry room and free luggage store. Guests travelling with laptops can take advantage of free Wifi in the communal areas and will also have access to a computer room.
Safestay is a great base for exploring York's Roman, Viking, and Medieval heritage. This grand walled city boasts a wealth of attractions from the iconic York Minster, the National Railway Museum, Castle Museum and Cliffords Tower.
Commenting on the addition of Safestay York, Larry Lipman Chairman of Safestay says, “We are really pleased to be able to announce the opening of York so soon after successfully listing Safestay on the AIM. As the first and only listed hostel business, we are a game-changer for the industry and we now look forward to further expansion of the brand across the UK & Continental Europe.”
