Runners from around the world have contested the China Xian City Wall International Marathon since it was inaugurated in 1993. The route circles the 13.7 km perimeter of one of the largest and most complete ancient city walls in China, which spans between 12 and 14 metres. It is one of the most unique and scenic marathon sites in the world.
The marathon starts and finishes at the South Gate of the wall, which is adjacent to the Grand Castle Hotel. The hotel is authorised by the Sports Committee of Xian as an official registration point for contestants.
Xian City Wall was built in 1370 during the Hongwu Period of the Ming Dynasty. The Xian Municipal Government bridged gaps in the ancient wall in 2004 so as to allow the marathon to become an important international event.
The marathon is recognised as an official national health and fitness event by Chinas General Administration of Sports and National Tourism Administration.
The Grand Castle Hotel, uniquely designed in the historic architectural style of the adjacent ancient City Wall which it overlooks, is newly re-opened following an extensive facelift and re-branding.
