The process is robust and in our opinion fair. We sought advice prior to redeveloping from the AAA to make sure the improvements to the hotel would be within the criteria, and arranged to be assessed after we had refurbished the guest rooms and introduced innovations that are the current expectations of travellers.
We installed secondary glazing to all rooms, additional recycling options, biodegradable products and some innovative and customer driven extras such as FREE and unlimited high speed wireless internet and iPads for all guests use and iPod docks in all rooms. We decked our pool area, rebuilt our gardens and even introduced a Croquet Lawn. The upgraded Royal Rooms were fitted with pillow topped beds, ergonomic guest desks, giving the hotel a 'traditionally elegant' feel with contemporary style. The hotel maintained in 4.5 star rating and came very close to an upgraded 5 star rating.
This means that we now have a clear view on what we are going to do next, guided by the AAA standards. Additionally this year, we introduced new RFID door locking systems and floor by floor security, and are about to install IPTV Systems, and upgrade the TV's in the suites with Smart 55' TV's in the executive and spa suites and 40' in the Royal guest rooms that overlook the Botanic Gardens.
The Royal on the Park is a 44 year old hotel with a fantastic reputation, however in 2011 the hotel was looking tired. To refresh the hotel, we assessed the new AAA standards and Tqual accreditation standards and decided to undertake a 5 million dollar refurbishment.
As well as achieving a AAA green star rating and benchmarking the property with two years of Global Travel Agents Association Sustainability awards, the hotel was awarded the Queensland Hotels Association Best Redeveloped Hotel in 2012 and the Walnut Restaurant and Lounge Bar - Best Tourism Restaurant in the Queensland Tourism awards.
General Manager Steve Underwood said “the importance to the industry to have a internationally recognised system of rating was pivotal to the hotel. It’s about credibility in the market. The AAA standards are benchmarked internationally and the expectation of customers can only be fulfilled if this process evolves, keeping pace with customers’ expectations”.
