The Royal Flying Doctor Service and its 90th anniversary in Australia are the feature of the latest TRAVEL OZ special, with this programme marking 10 years on air.
The Flying Doctor special follows 25 vintage planes as they fly out of the Flying Doctor Base
in Dubbo NSW to Moree, and onto Longreach, Cloncurry and Mt Isa.
The special also profiles the Dubbo and Moree regions, with the new Pride Lands lion enclosure at the Western Plains Zoo, Pillaga Pottery, cotton picking, and hot thermal spas, with funding support from Destination NSW and Dubbo and Moree Tourism.
Planes that flew in the recent Flying Doctor 90th anniversary Pilgrimage included several tiger moths, one flewn by a QANTAS A380 pilot, and a superbly restored 1936 Stinson.
Royal Flying Doctor Service, South Eastern section CEO Greg Sam watched as the vintage plane fleet lifted off from Dubbo. “We've treated millions of people in rural and outback Australia since our first flight. In the last year alone, 330,000. The service is unique.”
While the Flying Doctor celebrates 90 years of operation, Travel Oz marks 10 years on air.
For the first 7 years, the ABC aired Travel Oz, while the Seven Network began screening the series 3 years ago.
In 124 episodes, Travel Oz has featured all of mainland Australia from the desert to the Reef, Australia's Antarctic territory, and Australian islands from the Cocos Islands and Christmas Islands to the Tiwi and Torres Straight Islands.
Says producer/presenter Greg Grainger: “We aim to capture the spirit of Australia, from its warm colourful characters to its breathtaking destinations and events.”
Travel Oz now screens on Channel 7, 7TWO, 7FLIX, QANTAS inflight, National Geographic Asia and in vignette form to the Peoples Daily Online China (audiences up to 8,000,000) and web outlets reaching more than 500,000,000 (Daily Motion, Toutiao, Flickr, Buzzfeed)
