Romantic Cities – Highlights in 2019

Romantic Cities

KOBLENZ, FEBRUARY 2019

In 2019, the Romantic Cities will take you to new musical heights and open the door to Rhineland-Palatinate's viniculture. We will be attending IMM London to outline this years' top events, wines and historical attractions in Idar-Oberstein, Koblenz, Mainz, Speyer, Trier and Worms, six of the major tourist destinations in Romantic Germany.

Rhineland‑Palatinate's love for wine has grown steadily ever since the first vine was planted by the Romans more than 2,000 years ago. Enjoy the wines, regional delicacies and convivial atmosphere at one of the numerous wine festivals. Savour a glass of the finest wines at 'Wein am Dom' in Speyer (13 and 14 April) or resign yourself to the fact that 'Everything happens for a riesling' at 'Electronic Wine' in Koblenz (14 and 15 June), where you can taste the delicious wines of the Rhine and Moselle regions to the sound of drum and bass, deep house, tech house, techno and house music in a relaxed atmosphere. If you prefer a more dignified atmosphere you should be able to get a table in a rustic wine bar or Straußwirtschaft (seasonal wine tavern). And afterwards why not spend the night at the new Fährhaus hotel in Koblenz!

All cities regularly serve as venues for the spectacular events held throughout the year. Music, art and culture lovers can look forward to the Nibelung Festival in Worms (12 to 28 July), 'Jazz Days' in Idar-Oberstein (24 and 25 May), Johannisnacht in Mainz (21 to 24 June)—which commemorates Johannes Gutenberg, one of the city's most famous sons—as well as the traditional romantic Christmas markets (from November to January 2020). All are second to none.

The Romantic Cities rank among the oldest cities in Germany, boasting a truly rich history. Indeed, Trier is the oldest city in Germany, where you can experience the rich diversity of Roman life—including gladiators, legionaries, merchants and craftsmen—up close and personal at the Roman Festival held at the Imperial Baths (25 and 26 May). In keeping with this, the Rhineland‑Palatinate Directorate General for Cultural Heritage (GDKE) perfectly complements the cities' cultural offerings. It has been tasked with safeguarding, maintaining and preserving the state's cultural heritage that has been put in its care for future generations, while promoting monuments as cultural and tourist attractions. This year, the Historical Museum of the Palatinate is hosting 'Marilyn Monroe. Die Unbekannte', an exciting special exhibition exploring the hitherto unknown side of the actress, singer and style icon of an entire epoch.
