River of Lakes Heritage Corridor Preserves Best of St. Johns River Country

St. Johns River Country

For those who live in and visit the area, St. Johns River Country is known as a part of Florida where small town charm prevails and people live in close touch with their natural surroundings. It is also home to singular institutions such as Stetson University, the Cassadaga Spiritualist Camp and the Spring Garden Ranch Training Center, which have entertained visitors for generations. To preserve and highlight the regions most valuable natural, historic and cultural resources for themselves and for travelers from around the world, residents of St. Johns River Country have formed The River of Lakes Heritage Corridor. Named in tribute to the St. Johns River and the numerous lakes that contribute to the diverse natural environment, The River of Lakes Heritage Corridor is similar to a historic district, but broader and not bound by architecture alone. Much as the river served as the areas first highway and means of transportation, the Corridor will stimulate economic development and tourism by protecting, celebrating and showcasing a regional way of life. Visitors will be able to explore the unique geographic area that covers much of the 14 delightfully diverse communities that comprise St. Johns River Country. When completed, the Corridor will incorporate more than 70 culture and heritage sites marked with distinct signage and interpretive stories to explain their history and significance. The sites will be categorized as having natural, historical or cultural attributes or providing outdoors recreation activities and support facilities. New programs will be created to build on the areas assets, including wildflower cultivation and plantings, agricultural tourism, new bed & breakfast inns, and educational programs for students and adults, just to name a few.

As the Corridor develops as a heritage tourism destination, visitors will be able to learn more about it through brochures, a web site and other tourism programs intended to promote the area.

The River of Lakes Heritage Corridor serves the communities of Barberville, Cassadaga, DeBary, DeLand, DeLeon Springs, Deltona, Glenwood, Enterprise, Lake Helen, Orange City, Osteen, Pierson, Seville and Volusia. The Corridor will constantly evolve to include new programs, festivals and events. For more information, contact (386) 775-2006, toll-free (800) 749-4350 or visit www.StJohnsRiverCountry.com.
