"Transparency in savings messaging is key to instilling trust in our industry," says David Ferreira of Nightly.travel

The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has today published the results of its investigation into the big-six hotel comparison sites over misleading sales tactics.

The CMA found that sites are making misleading discount claims and putting consumers under unnecessary pressure to book hotel rooms.

In response, David Ferreira of Nightly.travel says that bookers should be wise to the ways they can beat the system and save money.

He says: "One trend that is becoming increasingly popular with cost-savvy travellers is hotel switching, where people take advantage of nightly hotel rate changes to save money.

"For example, a booker who finds a seven-night hotel break for £700 might assume that it costs £100 per night, but it is actually £80 for the first three nights and £115 for the final four nights because of local demand.

"By booking the first three nights at £80 and then looking for a cheaper hotel of a similar quality for the final four nights, people can make big savings. These are true savings that are based on comparing the cost of staying in one hotel the entire time versus switching between two hotels – there is no small print or hidden agenda.

"Technology can make hotel switching easier by automating this process.

"At Nightly.travel, we use algorithms to pair complementary hotels and create savings of up to 70%. Customers then make one booking and payment to confirm both reservations.

"The CMA has revealed how the biggest hotel comparison sites are misleading consumers, now it's time for people to find new ways to save."
