Cheapflights.co.uk gets to the bottom of where you can make or break your New Year's resolutions
It seems to be the same old story every year; we make resolutions and see them fizzle away come February. This year, Cheapflights.co.uk has vowed to keep theirs, with some more useful travel advice to suit everyone; determining the best destinations to make - or break - some of the most common New Year resolutions.
"I want to lose weight"
MAKE IT:
Paris, France - Ironically, one of the top culinary capitals of the world is also home to the lowest BMI (body mass index) bodies in Europe. The French lifestyle encourages slow eating - the average meal in Paris takes 42 minutes to complete - and making lunch (usually soup, salad, chicken, vegetables and a light dessert) the largest meal of the day, in order to digest properly. Adapt to this routine and that fromage won't go straight to your behind.
BREAK IT:
Rome, Italy - The Romans take their food seriously and although the general population is reasonably healthy, as a tourist, roaming around Rome is one temptation after the next. With street or "strada" after street of carb loaded pastas, risottos and pizzas; it is not for the horizontally-challenged.
"I'm going to save money"
MAKE IT:
Budapest, Hungary - Travel is not often on the top of the list when pinching pennies, however, Budapest offers one of the most affordable locations for a weekend break. With the average two-night stay at a three-star hotel costing just £134.76 vs. £319.88 in London, a walk up to Buda castle is not such an implausible thing after all.
BREAK IT:
New York City, USA - With a three course evening meal averaging £54.35 and a two night stay at a three star-hotel averaging £355.00, you may see that wallet getting slimmer by the minute. NYC is a fantastic location to experience - but not for those on a budget. Still, take a look at Cheapflights.co.uk, particularly during the current airline sales, and you might yet save something on your ticket....
"I will catch up on my sleep"
MAKE IT:
Harstad, Norway - During the winter months, parts of Norway receive very few hours of daylight - perfect for catching up on some zzz's. In Harstad, they often experience a Polar Night, where the sun never rises above the horizon. This means, however, that there's a good chance to see the Northern Lights; so make sure you're at least awake for that.
BREAK IT:
Las Vegas, USA - This is truly a city that never sleeps; with 24-hour casinos and all-you-can-eat buffets, hundreds of different shows and attractions, Las Vegas is unlike any other place on earth, so much so that the lights of The Strip can be seen from space. Great for an all-nighter but don't count on much sleep in this lively locale.
"I will not be attached to my mobile"
MAKE IT:
The Outback, Australia - The iconic Australian Outback accounts for roughly 80% of the country. In the more populated areas, phone reception and internet connections are available, but in most areas there is limited reception and availability making The Outback is one of the most recognisable yet remote places on the Earth. Whether you have committed to a digital detox or not, this region limits your options for you, so relax and enjoy the silence.
BREAK IT:
Singapore - As one of the most technologically progressive countries in the world, if you're looking to step away from the constant buzzing, ringing and dinging of all your tech devices this year, a trip to Singapore might make that resolution a little difficult. For starters, wireless broadband is available to everyone free of charge - no need to find a local hotspot to get online. Also home to tech giants HP, Microsoft, IBM amongst a few, this plugged-in paradise is moving fast towards the widespread use of mobile money, allowing its five million residents to pay for products on their mobile phones and other hand-held devices. Get ready to delay the digital detox just a little longer.
"Curb my coffee addiction"
MAKE IT:
Anywhere, Sri Lanka - Coffee may be hard to come by in this vibrant country but being renowned for its tea and tea production, Sri Lanka's tea industry brings in £42.5 million a year and accounts for more than 12% of the world's tea. In the tea hills, the humidity, cooler temperatures and rainfall create the perfect conditions to produce high quality tea. Here you'll find the "champagne of teas" Darjeeling; grown on 100 estates on the foothills of the Himalayas, on over 18,000 hectares at about 7000 feet, we're confident you'll forget all about your usual caffeine fix.
BREAK IT:
Sấo Paulo, Brazil - Coffee production in Brazil is responsible for about 40% of the world's coffee. Sao Paulo was one of the first cities to benefit from the coffee boom, becoming a centre for coffee commerce throughout the 19th century. If you're determined to kick that caffeine habit, a visit to São Paulo may derail your plans; coffee is an integral part of the social life in many Brazilian cities, with São Paulo topping the list. The sidewalk café culture is at large in this city of more than 11 million residents, making people-watching a great pastime.
"Fitness first"
MAKE IT:
Washington DC, USA - Holding the title of the fittest city in America is quite easy for the nation's capital. The Washington metro area has a low smoking rate, a better-than-average number of people eating fruits and vegetables and a lower-than-average rate of obesity and diabetes. DC is also a well-endowed city when it comes to community recreation centres, baseball fields and other places to exercise. Washington has the second-highest rate of people walking or biking to work in the USA, aided by 60 miles of bike lanes. Talk about motivation!
BREAK IT:
Anguilla, Leeward Islands - the Caribbean is repeatedly voted as one of the most relaxing places in the world by visitors. However, the British overseas territory of Anguilla, being voted the top beach destination in the Caribbean by the Travel Channel, is not exactly screaming "gym". When you have the likes of Shoal Bay (one of 33 beaches on a 16-mile stretch of white sand) on the island, gym motivation goes out the window. Plus, with an official ban on cruise ships, casinos and high-rise hotels on the island; lazing about takes on a whole new meaning. So as soon as your exercise routine gets boring, venture here for some serious downtime.
