Remembering Rupert Brooke On The Greek Island Of Skyros

Skyros Holidays

Join Skyros holidays this May and commemorate the life and work of the great English poet Rupert Brooke on Skyros island in Greece. See www.skyros.com

Rupert Brooke, the great English romantic poet, died in the opening months of the First World War on April 23, 1915 on a hospital ship off Skyros island. His body rests in a serene olive grove on the island's southern coast, a 'corner of a foreign field that is forever England'. Unlike the other great war poet Wilfred Owen, who was killed just before the armistice in 1918 and saw the war as a tragedy, a rather confused Brooke glorified the idea of dying for England. Still his spell as a great poet lasts to the present day.

Skyros Holidays will commemorate the anniversary of his death and celebrate his work's during a week's break on Skyros island, from the 24th to the 30th of May. Together with a visit to Brooke's grave, the holiday will also offer courses in creative writing, poetry, drawing, singing, songwriting, walks, talks and visits to interesting locations. The event will be facilitated by singer and composer Susie Self, granddaughter of John Drinkwater, one of the Dymock Poets that included Rupert Brooke, and Kevin Manwaring, author and specialist on Brooke's poetry.

The fees of £545 include half board, twin-shared accommodation in Skyros village and participation in all courses and events. One can fly to Skyros island in 40 minutes from the Athens airport.

Described by The Guardian as 'the first and still the best' alternative holiday, Skyros is ideal for independent travellers, literature lovers and culture vultures. Traditionally Greek and free of commercialism, the delightful Skyros village is close to a long sandy beach and has on its doorstep a lively nightlife.
