Picture this, a 360° visual panorama inside a former gasometer. Imagine being literally surrounded by images. The 'Dresden Panometer' is exactly that:
A panoramic painting inside a disused gas holder, and the current display, 'Dresden 1945', takes visitors on a stunning visual journey back to 1945 and the immediate aftermath of the bombing raids. It is viewed from a raised platform in the centre and uses perspective to create a realistic sense of distance. Austrian-born Yadegar Asisi, the brain behind the 'Panometer' (panorama + gasometer = panometer), is a trained architect and painter and has worked with 360° panoramas since the 1990ies. The 'Dresden 1945' panorama is accompanied by a multimedia exhibition providing an introduction to this specific period in time.
Not far from Dresden, the Cultural Heart of Germany region features another Panometer in Leipzig where the current panoramic painting shows the city after the Battle of the Nations in 1813 and visitors can see events unfold as from the perspective of standing on the roof of St. Thomas' Church.
