Regensburg - home of "the cathedral sparrows"

Regensburg Tourismus GmbH

The UNESCO World Heritage City Regensburg, in the heart of Bavaria, is the hometown of the oldest boys' choir in the world. The "Regensburger Domspatzen" (cathedral sparrows) exists for more than a thousand years and even the Popes Pius XII, Paul VI and John Paul II praised the outstanding quality of the church music in Regensburg. The brother of the current Pope Benedikt XVI., Georg Ratzinger, was their choirmaster for a long time. In December the boys' choir gives special Christmas concerts on December 4th, 11th, 12th and 18th, 2012. The sound of the boys' heavenly voices performing traditional German Christmas songs will put you in the mood to stroll along one of the four Christmas markets in the Old Town of Regensburg.

First there is Regensburg's traditional Christmas market at the Neupfarrplatz in the heart of the Old Town. Not far away, guests find the Lucrezia Markt, where artists and craftsmen set up stalls laden with wonderful handmade wares. In the courtyard of Thurn & Taxis Palace there is the Romantic Christmas Market, offering a lovely atmosphere, and a varied programme of cultural entertainment. Then on the other side of the Danube, there is the Advent Market in the Spitalgarten, which is a beautiful beer garden in summertime and in the Christmas season is transformed into a medieval Christmas Market with an impressive view on the skyline of Regensburg. While tasting a delicious, original "Knackersemmel" (pan with sausage, mustard, gherkin and horseradish) and a cup of mulled wine one can enjoy the celebratory atmosphere in the medieval town and wait for Christmas to come.
