Meili The New Red Panda Arrives At Lake District Wildlife Park 10 Dec 2013
Red Panda Arrives And Heralds Start Of Kids Go Free

Trotters World of Animals

Busy late season at Lake District Wildlife Park  near Keswick. In the last couple of months the park saw its first tapir born, then came the Micro Pigs and now the third new arrival – a Red Panda. To celebrate so much late season activity, the park is letting kids under 14 visit for free until 31st January.

The latest animal exhibit at the park is a female Red Panda who travelled from Whipsnade Zoo. Named  Meili, meaning beautiful one in Chinese, she has now settled in her new home.

Richard Robinson, Park Manager said “It’s been a few years since we have kept Red Panda at the park. As part of the managed breeding programme, animals move around zoos to provide the best possible chance for breeding success. In the past we have kept young males until they reach maturity, it’s now our chance with a new young female, who will be joined by a male in the next year or so.

Despite being nocturnal this young panda is still out during the day – she sleeps in the tree and can be spotted if you take time to stop to look. Richard said “people will often walk straight past her enclosure because they can’t see her wandering on the ground. We encourage our visitors to take their time when looking round, many species are not easy to spot in an instant, they like the cover and that’s the beauty of having a park with wide open spaces and places to hide – it’s more natural.”

The park is open all year round (except Christmas and New Year’s Day) and kids get to go free until the end of January.  For more information visit www.lakedistrictwildlifepark.com or call 017687 76239.
