For the seventh consecutive year, Australians have been recognized as the largest international market staying at the Hotel Beacon NYC on the Upper West Side. Step inside the well-appointed, fragrant hotel lobby on any day and you're likely to hear familiar Aussie accents discussing their bike ride in Central Park or shopping splurge in New York's designer outlets.
"Australians have been staying with us for the past 23 years, but it's really over the last seven years they've become the number one group in terms of visitor numbers," says Hotel Beacon NYC's general manager, Tom Travers. "They stay longer and really try to experience all that New York has to offer."
Surpassed only by domestic (American) guests, Australians continue to make up the majority of the New York property's overseas clientele for two main reasons, says Mr Travers.
"It's all about location in New York City and we have a great one, right in the heart of the Upper West Side neighborhood," he says. "We're close to great shopping, dining, museums and Central Park; the 72nd Street subway is just a block away."
"The other things Aussie visitors love are our amenities," Mr Travers continues.
Hotel Beacon NYC's rooms are spacious, freshly decorated and come equipped with private kitchenettes. The one- and two-bedroom suites are decked out with full-size kitchens.
“Our Australian guests always say they love buying food from the Fairway Market across the street and being able to cook it in their room as this saves them a lot of money, instead of eating out for breakfast, lunch and dinner," Mr Travers says. "Australians also like to put together a picnic or some snacks to take to Central Park, which is only three blocks away.”
Other popular amenities include free WiFi, the recently introduced gym and workout room, as well as a coin-operated laundry room. "Aussies often arrive here after a couple of weeks on the road so they really appreciate the opportunity to do their laundry," Mr Travers says.
With their well-known appreciation for fine wines and craft beers, Australians even influenced Mr Travers' decision to create a cocktail bar in the Beacon's stylish lobby.
“It was a 'no-brainer' to introduce Beacon Bar when our largest international group is Australians, who like to come home and have a drink after a day of sightseeing around New York,” Mr Travers said. “Our second largest international group is from the UK, and the British like a beer too.”
