A travel radio show aired in Melbourne and podcast on SoundCloud has generated an international audience, with statistics showing its listenership is growing around the globe.
The 'Travel Writers Radio show' started as a one-hour segment focusing on leisure and business travel on 87.8FM three years ago and after 12 months was expanded to two hours, to include a food, wine and lifestyle segment.
The only travel radio show airing on drive time, it was co-founded by industry stalwarts Graeme Kemlo and the late Pete Watson and now includes co-hosts Veronica Matheson (former travel editor of News Corp's Escape) and former ABC broadcasters Sue Ahearn and Adelaine Ng.
The show also includes a regular travel news segment by former radio news journalist Kirstie Bedford.
While the majority of its listeners are local, the show is generating a growing international audience on Soundcloud and via the internet, where it has hundreds of regular listeners from North America, Europe, the UK and Asia – with numbers growing daily.
To date there have been more than 27,500 plays of the 730 interviews and news segments posted on Soundcloud.
Co-host of the show Graeme Kemlo says it's been exciting to see how it has resonating with such a wide audience, many who listen to the interviews as podcasts via Soundcloud.
“We are proud to have created a show unlike anything else, where professional travel, food and wine writers from all around the world are telling their stories, in their words and interviewing the best in the business.”
He says while the show has journalists who report from around Australia, New Zealand, USA, Canada, Europe, Israel and parts of Asia, “we are always interested in hearing from journalists with stories to tell from other parts of the world”.
Kemlo says for those in public relations who work for tourism related businesses which have a unique story to tell, it's also a unique outlet for them to generate widespread exposure.
“Local and international travellers can't get enough of hearing about new experiences. This show is a great opportunity for PRs and industry members to get their news stories out to a local, and international audience – and we certainly have the expertise to ensure their message is well heard.
