Quinta do Lago Targets Triple Success At World Golf Awards

Quinta do Lago

Quinta do Lago is aiming to cap a successful year by claiming a memorable treble when the 1st World Golf Awards are held at the prestigious Portuguese resort later this month.

European Ryder Cup-winning captain Paul McGinley was on hand to officially open the venue's eagerly-awaited revamped North Course with renowned American architect Beau Welling in the Algarve last month, and the new-look layout has been shortlisted as Europe's Best New Golf Course – one of three awards that the resort is in contention to win.

Quinta do Lago's South Course, host of the Portuguese Open eight times, has been nominated as the Best Golf Course in Portugal, while the Algarve region has also been shortlisted for Europe's Best Golf Destination award by the organisers of the three-day event, which will take place in the Algarve from November 14-16.

Some of golf's most famous names will join leading industry figures at the resort for the inaugural awards ceremony and Quinta do Lago is relishing the opportunity to showcase the venue's world-class facilities at the global event.

John Dwyer, Quinta do Lago's chief executive, said: “It's a tremendously exciting time for the resort with the opening of the new North Course and other recent changes and it's fantastic to be given this opportunity to demonstrate what we have to offer to a global audience.

“We feel very privileged to have been given the chance to play a leading role in the inaugural World Golf Awards, and to be in the running for three leading awards makes our involvement even more special. We've received some tremendous feedback since reopening the North Course and believe it has the potential to become one of the new stars of European golf.”

One of the most talked-about design projects in Europe in 2014, Quinta do Lago's North Course has been redeveloped by McGinley in close collaboration with Welling, with the new venue being completed in the space of just ten months.

In line to become the new number one course at the prestigious family resort, the course has been revamped with the emphasis firmly on precision and strategy. While many modern-day developments tend to focus on length, Welling and McGinley have been keen to create a golfing experience where accuracy and course management are the key factors, and a course that is playable and fun for golfers of all abilities.

The redevelopment is part of a major €29m investment programme that has been undertaken by the resort since 2009, and guests will have the chance to enjoy some of the extensive golf and leisure facilities on offer at the resort –including 18 holes on the North Course.

In addition, delegates from 37 countries will also have the opportunity to play Quinta do Lago's two other championship courses during their stay – the South Course and Laranjal – with the climax to the awards taking place at the Conrad Algarve on Saturday, November 15.

All the winners will be crowned at a lavish gala ceremony while the event will also see some of golf's top names receive a number of special awards to honour their services to the game, with the details to be announced on the night.

Set amongst 2,000 acres of the picturesque Ria Formosa Natural Park, Quinta do Lago is one of the most highly regarded golf and residential developments in the Algarve since opening in 1972. Located just 15 minutes from Faro airport, the resort offers residents and guests an unparalleled location benefiting from a year-round temperate climate, a variety of lifestyle pursuits and a strong sense of community.

From the outset, the resort has been at the forefront of European golf with three 18-hole championship courses matched by outstanding practice facilities including a Paul McGinley Golf Academy, a state-of-the-art TaylorMade Performance Center and new short game area. Away from the fairways, there is plenty to keep everyone occupied, with events, tennis, cycling and watersports just some of the extensive leisure activities available.

Quinta do Lago's stunning location by the beach offers the perfect place to relax and unwind while the resort's wide array of restaurants, both formal and informal, take advantage of the fresh Mediterranean produce that the resort has become famous for.
