AUGUST 2015: To celebrate Agatha Christie's 125th Birthday this September, the Cary Arms - in Devon's Babbacombe Bay - is offering guests the chance to discover the wonderful and intriguing world of the best-selling crime novelist of all time in her home county.
Running Sunday to Thursday throughout September, the two night break will transport guests back to Agatha Christie's 1920's heyday in the surroundings of the stunning eight bedroom boutique hotel. The immersion will begin straight away with visitors enjoying a pre-dinner cocktail (such as the Mousetrap and the Whodunnit) and canapés, before sitting down to a 1920's three course dinner which include the classic dishes of the time such as New England Style Clam Chowder, Turkey Scaloppini with a morel-cognac sauce and Citrus Summer Pudding served with a blueberry anglaise.
The stay will also include a visit to Torquay Museum where they can explore the Agatha Christie Gallery, dedicated entirely to the author and her life and works. The gallery is home to many of the author's personal effects, such as letters and clothes, as well as props from the well-loved television adaptions of her books, including Hercule Poirot's iconic walking stick and Miss Marple's outfits. Guests can even step inside Poirot's study and longue which have been reconstructed inside the gallery.
Guests will then spend their stay learning about Agatha Christie's life in Devon and visiting her favourite locations, such as her beloved family holiday home, Greenway House. Here, visitors are able to take a glimpse into the house where the writer and her family would spend their summers and Christmases relaxing by the river and playing croquet. The grounds are also home to the infamous 'Boathouse' the inspiration for the crime scene in Dead Man's Folly.
Guests can also enjoy a cream tea made with Agatha Christie's favourite ingredient, Devonshire clotted cream.
For guests who can't bear to be parted with their beloved pooch (much like Agatha Christie who was rarely seen without her beloved wire-haired terrier, Peter), the hotel has several dog friendly rooms.
Visitors to the Agatha Christie festival (11 – 20 September) can double up their crime author dosage by enjoying this stay as well.
