About The George in Rye

Prominently positioned on the cobbled high street of the medieval town of Rye, The George in Rye is one of England's most highly regarded small hotels – a Grade II listed bolt-hole offering a welcoming retreat for foodies, design lovers and the creatively-inclined. Recently, it's become a firm favourite and unofficial home of cast and crew members filming on location in 1066 country including George Clooney, Matt Damon, Bill Murray and John Goodman who all stayed whilst filming 'Monuments Men'. The George boasts an original Regency ballroom where it hosts weddings and events for up to 120 people.

One of England's best-preserved medieval towns, Rye is a maze of cobbled streets and tiny passage ways. It is home to Henry James' Lamb House, its church is nearly a millennium old, and its former defence, the Ypres Tower, dates from 1250.  A few miles away lies Camber Sands, the longest stretch of sandy beach in East Sussex, which is bordered by the nature reserve of Rye Harbour.

The George in Rye's sixteenth century buildings, lovingly restored by owners Alex and Katie Clarke, offer an affectionate tribute to contemporary English design. The 34 individually-decorated bedrooms and suites all exude a sense of relaxation, calm and comfort. Rooms feature Vi-Spring beds, Frette linen, William Holland copper and zinc baths, power showers, REN products, flat screen TVs , Ruark iPod docks and free WIFI.

The George's restaurant, The George Grill, overlooks the high street and offers modern British food with European accents. The menu features produce sourced from the farms and fishermen around Rye and predominantly cooked on the wood charcoal grill.

Sample menu dishes include:

  • Seared Rye Bay scallops, serrano, salsify, spring onion & Olorosso
  • Ham hock & parsley terrine with remoulade, pickles & toasted pugliese
  • Whole local bream cooked in crazy water with Garganega wine, fennel, cherry tomato, chilli, lemon & rosemary
  • Salt marsh lamb rump with Sicilian braised chard, rosemary polenta and anchovy dressing

Next to the restaurant, The George Tap remains the social hub of Rye, championing locally-produced drinks such as Harvey's Sussex ale, Biddenden draft cider and eight wines from vineyards in Kent and Sussex.
