Press Trip Invitation: Genoa City Break- 6th- 9th June

Turismo In Liguria

The historic port city of Genoa in north-west Italy is running a three day group press trip from 6th-9th June. Despite being Italy's sixth largest city and having the country's biggest port, Genoa is often overlooked compared to neighbouring Venice, Rome and Florence. The trip will give media the chance to uncover the layers of this elusive Italian city through its gastronomy, historical palaces and traditions.

Highlights of the trip will be a walking tour through Genoa's old town, which is Europe's largest historical centre and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The centre is full of winding narrow streets known as 'caruggi' with hidden squares, churches and the 'Palazzi dei Rolli', the collective name given to 42 magnificent palaces, built between the 16th and 18th centuries. Many of the palaces will be visited over the weekend including the Strada Nuova, which is stretched across three palaces and houses Caravaggio's, Van Dyck's and Rubens. There will also be a visit to the Galata Sea Museum, which is the biggest maritime museum in the Mediterranean and to Genoa's Porto Antico, which was designed by Shard architect, Renzo Piano. Genoa's green areas will be explored with a walk around the stunning Nervi Parks, which are formed from several gardens that were once part of private villas.

Being the birthplace of pesto and a gastronomic capital, there will also be plenty of opportunities to sample the local produce with meals at top Genoa restaurants.

Most excitingly, on 8th June, it is the annual Regatta of the Ancient Maritime Republics, a rowing race between the most famous Italian maritime republics (Genoa, Pisa, Venice and Amalfi). Now in its 59th year, the regatta celebrates the endeavours and rivalries of these maritime republics throughout history and the race is complemented by a huge festival in Genoa with historical re-enactments and a medieval parade,
