Staff from a luxury UK self-catering rental agency are hiking along the Cornish coast in support of SUDEP Action's *PREVENT 21* campaign.
Trekking 273 miles along the Cornish section of the South West Coast Path, members of staff from Unique Home Stays are raising money for the TukTuk to Turkey Voyage in aid of SUDEP Action. The challenge stretches the whole of the Cornwall coastline, beginning in Morwenstow on the north coast and ending on the Rame Peninsula on the south. Staff are hiking the coast in a relay, with each member choosing a section to walk and recording it on tracking app, Strava. Stretches of the walk range from 10 miles to twenty and cover the official South West Coast Path route.
Five years ago, in 2013, Emily Sumaria unexpectedly lost her life to epilepsy, leaving behind a hole in her family with only photographs and memories to hold on to. The Sumuria family are now aiming to raise £120,000 by travelling across 21 countries in an Indian tuktuk to help prevent other families having to endure such pain. The TukTuk adventure started in London and is now journeying 3,700 miles to Istanbul, Turkey.
Rachel Samaria, Mother of Emily
“We are really thrilled. It is fabulous news that the whole office is getting behind us and we want to thank the team at Unique Home Stays for taking on the task of walking the entire Cornwall coastal path.”
A staggering 21 people have their lives cut short due to epilepsy every week and many of those deaths are avoidable. SUDEP (Sudden Unexpected Death in Epilepsy) Action, the charity championing the 'Prevent 21' campaign, is looking to raise £1 million over the next four years to fund ground-breaking scientific and clinical developments, raise awareness and continue to provide support to families desperately in need. The Sumaria family's efforts have added over £100,000 to this figure so far.
Rewan Taylor of Unique Home Stays has planned the route
“We decided that for our challenge we would walk the entire route of the Cornwall coast path, a distance of around 300 miles. We're doing this in somewhat of a relay, with each of us taking a section of between 10-20 miles. The aim is to use a fitness tracking app to track our route so that we can produce a map showing we've covered the entire distance.”
