Presidential Inaugural Floats Return to Shenandoah Valley

Shenandoah Caverns

Floats used in the 2005 Presidential Inaugural Parade are headed to American Celebration on Parade at Shenandoah Caverns, five miles north of New Market, Va. The 40,000-square-foot exhibition showcases spectacular parade floats from famous national celebrations like the Rose Parade, Presidential Inaugurals, and Thanksgiving parades. Two pieces from the 2005 inaugural will be installed by February 10. The 63-foot-long American Flag float was first built for President Ronald Reagans second inauguration in 1985. The flag float has also appeared in inaugural parades honoring presidents George H.W. Bush, Bill Clinton, and was the finale float in this years parade honoring George W. Bush. The flag contains 5,000 yards of red, white, and blue satin and serves as the backdrop for the performing stage in the attractions Freedom Hall. New to the exhibition will be the 23-foot-tall backdrop from the Texas float that honored President Bush in the 2005 parade. The dramatic backdrop features the Lone Star seal of Texas, an enormous pair of long horns representing the famous Texas cattle, and large gold letters spelling TEXAS. Floral treatments from the Texas float, which carried the Crawford, Texas High School Band and Miss Texas, will surround the backdrop, which will make a great photo opportunity, said Earl Hargrove, owner of the attraction and creator of parade floats for every Presidential Inaugural since 1949. The 85-foot-long Wyoming float and tow unit built to honor Vice-President Dick Cheney in 2001 and requested by the Presidential Inaugural Committee for the 2005 parade will be returned by February 18, in time for Presidents Day weekend. The float contains scenes and symbols of Wyoming and a 1,000-gallon re-circulating stream. The tow unit is disguised with an authentic 1840 Conestoga Wagon. (more)
