As Beijing turns autumnal hues, Langham Place, Beijing Capital Airport unveils its 'Autumn Art Exhibition' in the hotel's own 24-hour Art Gallery. The latest seasonal showcase exhibits contemporary art titled 'Portraits of a Woman', and features cutting-edge contemporary paintings and sculptures by five exciting Beijing-based artists. Accompanying the exhibition is a gourmet 'Art Menu' available for corporate or private banquets, where each artwork inspires a gourmet masterpiece on the plate.
"Reflecting the Chinese proverb, 'Women hold up half the sky', this dynamic selection of contemporary artworks depicts women over four decades of China's recent history and in a variety of places - both physical and emotional," says Tom Pattinson, exhibition Curator of the Art Gallery at Langham Place, Beijing Capital Airport.
The five artists featured in the 'Portraits of a Woman' exhibition are Zhang Qitian, Wang Jingwa, Wu Yujuan, Li Changhai and Su Zhijie. Their pieces span a period of time from the revolutionary 1970s to the modern day and encompass a variety of artistic styles, from pop art to classic oils and humorous sculpture. The overriding theme is the strength and vulnerability of womanhood. "It is up to the viewer to decide what each woman is feeling and if the changes China has undergone has affected those feelings," says Pattinson.
Several artists look back at their own simple but happy childhood. Wang Jingwa's family of women is seen standing together in an empty field against a red-washed, revolutionary backdrop. Zhang Qitian paints a scene from the perspective of a young man watching the girl he may be in love with as she strolls through the streets of a traditional Chinese village. Wu Yujuan depicts a young girl dressed in Red Guard uniform, finding comfort in her toy panda.
Other pieces are more contemporary and explore aspects of female confidence and sexuality. Li Changhai's pop art portraits use bold colours, magnification and exuberant facial expressions. Su Zhijie's corpulent sculptures express female sexuality with a humourous and self-assured touch.
The 'Portrait of a Woman' exhibition will be on display in the Art Gallery adjacent to the lobby of Langham Place, Beijing Capital Airport for three months from 20 September, 2011.
GOURMET ART MENU COMPLEMENTS AUTUMN EXHIBITION
A 'Gourmet Art' menu inspired by the 'Portrait of a Woman' exhibition is also being served at Langham Place, Beijing Capital Airport. Fashioned by Langham Place's gourmet artists - Executive Sous Chef Erik Ye and Head Pastry Chef Fernando Qiu - each course is inspired by elements of a different featured artwork. The menu includes:
Roasted Sea Scallops, Cauliflower Purèe, Muscatel Vinegar - inspired by the soft, white flesh of Su Zhijie's corpulent beauty.
Crab Salad, Apple Jelly, Bloody Mary Cream - incorporates the colours of the Red Guard uniform in Wu Yujuan's portrait, plus the sense of comfort the young girl finds in her toy.
Champagne and Pineapple Sorbet - reflects the atmosphere of fun and celebration in Li Changhai's pop art painting, complete with a blue ribbon of sugar.
Slow Roasted Chicken Breast, Chestnut Stuffed Chicken Legs, Potato Pave, Gingered Mustard Sauternes Sauce - inspired by Wang Jingwa's family portrait in the field, using rich, wholesome ingredients to reflect a bountiful harvest.
Praline Mille Feuille, Mango Coulis - mimics the colours of Zhang Qitian's drawing embellished with a lone woman figure in dark chocolate.
The 'Gourmet Art' menu is available for lunch and dinner and is priced at RMB 1,400 plus 15% service charge per person. Add a little extra creativity to the feast with a glass of Champagne and free-flowing house wine and soft drinks for two hours, for an additional RMB 400 per person.
Langham Place, Beijing Capital Airport is situated right next to Beijing Capital International Airport's iconic Sir Norman Foster-designed Terminal 3. The first 'airport lifestyle hotel' features DJs in the lobby, loft-style apartments and a 24-hour high-tech environment for work and play in its 372 rooms, two-storey Club L lounge, five exciting restaurants and bars - and leading Art Gallery.
