Polar Bear Shores behavioural enrichment

Sea World

The park has many years experience in the care, conditioning, enrichment and educational interpretation of marine mammals such as dolphins and seals, and has earned an enviable reputation for its professional and dedicated contribution to marine mammal conservation.

Polar Bear Shores provides many different forms of enrichment to stimulate the polar bears mental and physical activity. There is a cascading waterfall with a winding creek, passing through a number of shallow pools, culminating in a large main pool that will be up to four metres deep to encourage deep and shallow diving, and will be intermittently stocked with fish.

This habitat provides an array of climbing outcrops, fallen trees, shrubs and other structures that the animals would usually encounter in the wild to ensure physical and mental stimulation. There is also be a strategically placed rock platform providing the polar bears with a vantage point, enabling long distance viewing across the exhibit and beyond.

Many different natural substrates such as loam, gravel, river stone, rocks and natural bedding are utilised throughout the exhibit to encourage the bears to dig, burrow and explore. Strategically placed wind generation fans direct a number of interesting smells and scents, such as herb gardens and perfumes to stimulate the bears olfactory senses, and misting, fogging and rain simulation help create a changing environment.

The entire exhibit is dynamic in nature with polar bear keepers and handlers moving logs and shrubs, and hiding food to ensure the bears are stimulated by their changing surroundings.
