The western region of Poitou-Charentes is the rising star of France, Chez Nous has found. With 30 years' experience in the French holiday sector, Chez Nous has spotted a distinct growth in interest in the region. This year the brand has recorded 2,000 more searches on its website www.cheznous.com for seven and 14-night holidays in Poitou-Charentes than for ever-popular Dordogne, also in western France. High season, June and September were the most popular periods for holidays. Overall, there were many more website searches for holidays in Poitou-Charentes this year than last.
This trend was confirmed by the London office of Atout France, the official French tourist board. It measured hotel stays and notes that in the first three months of 2014 visitor numbers from the UK have increased by 13.9% compared to the first quarter of 2013. It also confirms that in 2013 Poitou-Charentes was the 10th most visited region of France by the British and the UK is the largest overseas market for the area.
There are around 340 Poitou-Charentes holiday properties in the Chez Nous portfolio and 19 new ones have been added for 2015. Chez Nous is pleased that as the region grows in popularity, more owners of holiday properties there are choosing its website to promote it.
Paddy Daly, Director of Membership Development at the Association of British Travel Organisers to France (ABTOF) has also noted the trend: “Poitou-Charentes has been overlooked in the past, but clearly people are now discovering it. It has a lovely coastline and unique attractions like the Marais-Poitevin countryside and delightful towns La Rochelle and Poitiers.”
There are flights from many UK airports to Poitiers, the region's capital, including from Belfast, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Manchester, Birmingham, Bristol and London airports
About Poitou-Charentes
Situated in the heart of the French Atlantic coast, the Poitou-Charentes offers the visitor a lovely choice of coastal destinations such as Royan or the Ile de Ré, city breaks to Saintes or La Rochelle and beautiful countryside such as the Marais Poitevin or Cognac Country. It has a number of UNESCO World Heritage sites. It is a gastronomic destination of note – oysters, mussels, sea salt, pineau des Charentes, and is easily accessible by road, rail or air from the UK. It boasts a Mediterranean climate of around 300 sunshine days a year. There are many events that take place in the area throughout the year including, in 2014, the 30th Anniversary of the music festival Francofolies.
