The Murray River Canoe Trails wind through the majestic River Red Gum forested banks of Barmah National Park (VIC) and the Murray River National Park (NSW). This sensory experience on the border of New South Wales and Victoria is a wonderful way to immerse yourself in the Murray River and the open expanse that is Barmah Lake. Surrounded by Ramsar-listed wetlands, the canoe trails paddle through bush rich with nesting Galahs, Cockatoos, Cockatiels and various Parrots.
The aim of the project is to pilot joint management of cross border visitor experiences. To deliver this seamless paddling experience to visitors to Australia's longest river, partnerships have been formed between; Parks Victoria jointly managing with Yorta Yorta Corporation, National Parks and Wildlife Service and the Murray River Tourism Board. The outcome of these partnerships will create a full and rich paddling experience rather than one state showcasing only half of an experience.
With attractions on both sides of the border being used and newly renovated boat ramps and camping areas at both Barmah Camping Area (VIC) and Swifts Creek Camping Area (NSW) the best of both national parks provide the staging points for visitors. Approximately 3 hrs from Melbourne and 1hr from either Shepparton or Deniliquin, the Murray River Canoe Trails will be ready for use with the higher water flows between September 2016 and April 2017.
