One Place Remaining - UNESCO Trip To The South Of France, 2 - 5 October 2013

Languedoc-Roussillon

There is one place remaining on an inspiring press trip to the Languedoc-Roussillon in the south of France, taking in the UNESCO heritage sites of the the Roman Aqueduct the Pont du Gard, The breathtaking Causses and Cévennes landscapes and the hilltop medieval village of St Guilhem le Désert. The Itinerary is as follows:

 

Wednesday 2nd October

11:30 Depart Gatwick airport on Easyjet flight to Montpellier

14:15 Arrive in Montpellier

 

Leave for St Guilhem le Désert (A UNESCO world heritage site: located on the St Jacques de Compostelle pathway.)

Visit the Maison du grand site and the Pont du Diable. (Both of which are registered as UNESCO world heritage sites.)

Thursday 3rd October

10h00 Visit the Maison des Vautours - Vulture Reserve

Discover this site which is home to a colony of vultures who have been reintroduced to the area, the different species, their environment and their history in Lozère

12h00 Lunch at the Muse and the Rozier , a quality 3 star hotel, in Peyreleau in the  Gorges du Tarn

14h30 La Ferme Caussenard d'Autrefois

In this farm there are many architectural features such as top arches and limestone slate roofs. Time has stood still for a century ... From the stable to the sheep pen, from the kitchen to the "souilhardo", from the rooms in the attic to the barn of baked bread ... discover the daily life of the peasants of the Causse Mejean who lived and worked here until the 1950s, the old furniture, linens, dishes, tools and farm machinery, old photos, the film "Lou Mèjio", a miniature village and some farm animals... relive a life which is so near and yet so far.



16h30 Visit the Aven Armand Caves

Here a funicular transports you 50 meters underground through a 200m long tunnel into a vast space which is so big that Notre Dame could fit inside it. Set against lighting, over 400 stalagmites rise up, several meters high. The Grande Stalagmite holds the world record for the longest stalagmite at nearly 30 meters long.

Friday 4th October

Morning: Leave for the Pont du Gard which was registered as a UNESCO world heritage site in 1985. Le Pont du Gard has been completely restored in the last decade to become the jewel of this setting of 165 hectares of restored space. 

 

Afternoon: Leave for St Gilles, a  XII abbey-church at the gates of the Camargue Gardoise, a common starting point for pilgrimages along the paths of St Jacques de Compostelle. The abbey-church is classified as a UNESCO world heritage site on account of its façade. It is considered a masterpiece of roman art.

Saturday 5th October

Early morning return departing at 9h45 (easyjet flight)
