As part of its expansion, luxury tour operator Frontier America is now offering train tours of the US. Clients can join in the celebrations of the 100 year anniversary of the National Park Serivce whilst enjoying the comfort of the historical Amtrak trains. The first Transcontinental Railroad opened in 1869; today's trains are much more comfortable.
With four fabulous routes available, a favourite is the Empire Builder from Chicago to Glacier National Park with three nights at Glacier Park Lodge, one of the historic lodges in the park. Glacier, perhaps one of the less known of the American Parks has over 25 glaciers, 130 lakes and 200 waterfalls. The Going-to-the-sun Road across the Continental Divide is one of the all-time great drives in the world. Clients can hike or take a boat on Swiftcurrent Lake where they might well see some of the park's wildlife.
Different wheels are the next mode of transport as guests will take a coach through Yellowstone National Park, the Grand Tetons, Salt Lake City, to Moab in order to see the Arches and Canyonlands National Park before joining the California Zephyr back to Chicago.
This holiday has a little of everything: history as evidenced by the train names and highlighted in the excellent Trains and Rails programme organised by Amtrak, wildlife in all of the parks, awe-inspiring scenic beauty and a vast range of sights from the red rocks of the Arches to the towering peaks of the Tetons interspersed with the sights and smells of Old Faithful.
