Three Olympians, Daley Thompson, Steve Cram and Jamie Peterkin are lending their support to the St Lucia International Triathlon being held on 21 November 2015, by running a series of master classes where they will pass on their personal tips and expertise in running and swimming.
The 2014 event attracted over 180 competitors from 15 countries and even led to a proposal on the finish line.
The event ambassador is double gold Olympic champion Daley Thompson who will be joined by Olympic silver medalist and BBC commentator, Steve Cram and St Lucia's own Olympic swimmer, Jamie Peterkin. All three will be holding a series of group master classes in running and swimming in the week leading up to the triathlon.
Event director and former Olympic competition manager for the Olympic triathlon at London 2012, John Lunt said: “We are delighted to have Steve and Daley back with the St Lucia Triathlon helping to raise the event's profile and sport awareness on the island. They make a fabulous addition to the sporting package and the event on 21 November. What a fantastic opportunity to rub shoulders with those that have performed at such a high level on the world stage.”
Daley Thompson comments, “Having Steve and Jamie on board takes the event to another level. Between us we have a huge amount of experience and look forward to sharing this with triathlon participants.
“Our master classes in running and swimming will be held early each day on the golden sands of the host hotel, The Landings.”
The Saint Lucia Triathlon will be the culmination of a week-long festival of fun activities hosted by Tri St Lucia which include a 2km ocean swim, an aquathlon (swim and run) and a beach run. Designed with all ages and fitness levels in mind, these activities will provide holidaymakers with a taste of the overall triathlon event, offering families, couples and single people the opportunity to take part.
The event, with a strong Pirate theme, has three separate competitive distances including:
• The Dagger: 200m swim, 6.6km bike, 2.5km run
• The Pistol: 750m swim, 13.2km bike, 5km run
• The Cutlass: 1500m swim, 26.4km bike, 10km run
The course includes a swim in the beautiful clear waters of Rodney Bay, then a tough hilly and a challenging bike ride and finally the run loop to Pigeon Island and back.
Children have two events to challenge them: for 8- 12 year olds there will be a 100m swim, an 800m bike and an 800m run as their challenge. Those aged 12- 16 can do the aquathlon, 200m swim and 800m run.
This is a magnificent opportunity to visit the Caribbean, do a race, mix with Olympians and have a great time. As well as the event, there will also be a number of island receptions including a pre-race party, a post event BBQ and party with prize giving on the beach and there is also a spectacular ocean boat trip to the Pitons for all competitors and partners.
November is a good time to visit St Lucia as it the off peak period. This means that packages including flights, accommodation and meal start from £1,000 per person. Many hotels are offering extras such as spa treatments and celebration dinners for race participants. Luxury all suite resort, The Landings is the official race hotel and main race headquarters. The swim start, finish and transition area will be on the hotel beach as will the post race party.
There are two flights a day to St Lucia from Gatwick on both British Airways and Virgin Atlantic. Airport transfers and free bike carriage on the flights are also available.
With so many options for flights and accommodation, it is easy for participants to book their own package online. Anyone wanting to have someone else manage the whole process can book through Sportstours International at: www.sportstoursinternational.co.uk/triathlon/tristlucia-triathlon
