Although the Utah Olympic Park is currently open to the public for guided tours, Memorial Day weekend signals the official summer kickoff with the opening of the bobsled track, freestyle splash pool and nordic hills. Public bobsled rides on The Comet and freestyle intro camps begin May 28. The Utah Olympic Park will be open on Memorial Day. Reservations are required for both activities by calling (435) 658-4206 or e-mail at reservations@olyparks.com.
This summer, bobsled rides are offered five days a week Wednesday through Sunday with sessions at noon, 1 p.m., 2 p.m., 3 p.m., 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. These wheeled sleds accommodate three passengers and have a certified driver as the public experiences the ride of a lifetime on the 15-curve, 8/10ths of a mile Olympic track. Bobsled passengers travel up to 70 miles per hour with 4 Gs of force with the equivalent of a 40-story drop in just over a minute. Participants must be 14 years of age and older. Cost is $65 per person (compared to $200 in the winter season).
Freestyle introductory camps are also available on Wednesday-Sunday throughout the summer from 2-5 p.m. Individuals age 6 and older can train alongside Olympic medalists and jump into the 750,000 gallon splash pool as coaches teach the basic freestyle skills. Each half-day camp is limited to 12 participants. Cost is $65 per person. Three-day and five-day camps are also offered for athletes seeking a more intensive jumping experience.
Beginning Memorial Day weekend, other new activities at the Utah Olympic Park are:
Street Luge: Experience wheeled street luge racing in head-to-head competition as participants roll down a ramp and across the pavement on a designated course inside the lower loop of the sliding track. Street luge is offered Wednesday-Sunday for anyone age 8 and older. Cost is $5 for two runs.
Bobsled Push: Test your strength and speed against the standards of the worlds best athletes by pushing a 400-pound bobsled from the start position down a 50-foot rail. Participants measure their performance against time. The bobsled push operates outside the lower loop of the sliding track. Minimum age is 8 years old. Cost is $5 for two attempts.
Hot Air Balloon: View the Utah Olympic Park from on high in a hot air balloon ride. Passengers in the eight-person basket float 300 feet in the air on a tether from the ski jump base area for a 15-minute ride. Rides are offered Wednesday-Sunday from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. Open for all ages. Cost is $15 per person.
Aerial Bungee: Fly 20 feet in the air on an aerial bungee system with a safety harness that simulates freestyle jumping. Bounce, twist and flip on a circus-style bungee trampoline in this self-generated activity that is available on Wednesday-Sunday in the ski jump base area. Open to everyone age 6 and older. Cost is $5.
Nordic/Freestyle Lift: Enjoy a ride on either the nordic chair lift to the top of the K120 jump or the winter freestyle hill. A leisurely ride gives participants a birds-eye view of the Utah Olympic Park and a close-up of ski jumpers when they are in training. The $5 fee includes both lifts.
