This is a homestay to suit all ages, occasions and budgets in the centre of the world heritage listed Angkor temple region of Siem Reap.
A short Remarque (Tuk Tuk) ride from the architectural masterpiece of Angkor Wat, the Bong Thom Homestay is a unique community-based tourism experience that captures the essence of village life in the heartland of Cambodia.
Costs for three nights accommodation for two in the private wooden-house room begin at $AUD450 inclusive of daily breakfast, two half board meals and return airport transfer. A special 'stay for three nights and pay for two' promotion is available for June - September 2015.
In addition to an intimate relaxing stay, your hosts can assist with functions, cooking classes, team building, camping, weddings, and very worthwhile student programs. Highlights of a stay amid mango and dragon fruit orchards are fishing (in the purpose-built fish farms) rice harvesting, lazy ox cart rides, strolling through the paddocks or simply taking it easy amid the serenity of rural Cambodia.
Located in the heart of the popular Angkor Wat national park, the Bong Thom Homestay is located in the San Day Village, Banteay Srey District, on the way to Bantey Srey temple about 26Km from Siem Reap. It is ideally situated for travellers looking for the 'real' Cambodia inside the cradle of Angkor.
The Bong Thom Homestay provides easy access to Siem Reap: 18km from Angkor Wat, 10km from Prasat Pre Rup, 9km from Prasat Banteay Sam Re, 19km to the Kbal Spean waterfall and 25km from the Phnom Kulen waterfall.
All rooms are designed with comfort in mind, built of teak and local timbers and standing on stilts. The Bong Thom Homestay offers something for everyone. Delicious local catering and lunches are a highlight of the Bong Thom Homestay with more than 10,000 catering and lunch guests hosted last year usually as they return from viewing Angkor Wat and surrounding temples. A seven-course lunch using local produce ranges from USD$15 to $20 per person. Also available are sunrise breakfasts, cocktail sunsets and special events that take advantage of the 3.6 hectare site opposite the Butterfly Gardens.
The Bong Thom Homestay was founded by Mr Sou Say (Thom) in response to growing demand from European, Asian and local tour operators for a quality Cambodia experience that includes genuine Khmer foods from the district.
The first phase of the homestay opened to international guests in 2009. As a community-based project with neighboring Phum Sandan, the Bong Thom Homestay aims to diversify livelihoods and improve living standards. It employs 20 local villagers on a full-time basis and can call on extra staff to service larger groups. The Bong Thom Homestay also sponsors on site a small English language school for local children aged from six years and upwards.
The objective is to liaise with local communities and use their own resources, and to provide opportunities for visitors to experience the culture, local nature and true Khmer lifestyle.
