Michael and Luciana Nijdam (the new General Managers at Carrington) have settled in and now have a lot of exciting plans in store for Carrington Resort and Karikari Estate Vineyard & Winery. Over the next few months we will be building a new reception and pro-shop area, gently upgrading our rooms and completing soft-refurbishment touches in the Dining Room.
Please note that in order for these enhancements to take place we have now entered into hibernation mode and will not be taking any bookings for our Lodge Rooms or for our Dining Room for the rest of July and August. During this time we will, however, keep our villas open on a self-catering basis.
We have just broken ground into what will be our new Reception and Pro-shop, an airy and welcoming building that will be much easier to find following our long stint based below the Lodge Rooms. The new Reception will also offer a more complete array of golf gear and wine too for those impromptu purchases.
In addition, we are building a Grape Arbor next to our winery, Karikari Estate, so that views can still be enjoyed despite the elements as well as being able to enjoy our new vintages by a wood burning fire. This new structure will be purpose built to cater for large special events such as conference and wedding groups for up to approximately 100 guests. We have also just introduced a new menu along with the favorite staples using our farms grass fed Angus beef.
Golf News: Naturally, the key for any golfer is the condition of the course and we are glad to say we have a brand new driving range adjacent to the first hole and two new concrete pathways: one running parallel to the 10th and 16th holes and the other running along the 17th fairway. Sinclair Hogan, Golf Course Manager, has been with us for over a year and the course has never looked better.
Carrington will once again host the annual Golf House Carrington Classic tournament. Now in its third year, this event will be taking place on the 26th 28th October 2007. The weekend event is limited to a field of 72 players and is based on the PaR nz two-ball Ambrose format which is competitive and favours both high and low handicaps, unlike many Ambrose formats which often favour higher handicapped players. The team handicap is based on 50% of the lowest handicap and only 20% of the higher handicapped player. Once again players will compete for The Golf House Trophy and a fantastic prize table sponsored by the Carrington Resort and Team McMillan BMW. For more information, please contact Denise Langdon at PaR nz on phone +64 (0)9 486 1077, email denise@parnz.co.nz or refer www.parnz.co.nz
Farm News: Rex, our head farmer says that the grass has been growing well and we have 468 head of rising two-year-old Angus Beef cattle spread around our 200 ha farm at present. We were proud to have our beef in the semi-finalists in the recent Steak Of Origin competition earlier this year.
We are looking at including farm tours as another activity option to see a modern sustainable beef farm in action. So come up to Carrington in the near future to see a model farm and experience for yourself our mouth-watering beef, personally cooked for you by our skilled team of chefs.
Winery News: Our 2005 Karikari Estate Pinotage was recently released and was the only Pinotage to be given 5 stars by Michael Cooper who comments the wine is "Supercharged...lush, spicy and complex....already delicious". Our 2005 Syrah (a significant step up from the 2004) has also been released and people are really enjoying it, especially alongside our famous Angus Beef Pies. The 2005 Karikari Estate Merlot/Cabernet/Malbec will be available later this month.
Ben Dugdale, our Chief Wine Maker was in Wellington on Tuesday 17th July participating in a wine tasting at Regional Wines and Spirits (please refer to http://www.regionalwines.co.nz/ for further details) As previously mentioned, great plans are afoot to redevelop the outside dining area and also the Tasting Room, so watch this space!
