New York is famed for its plethora of festivals and events, so here’s cheap yet chic The Hotel @ Times Square’s pick of the city’s most fun goings-on this summer, from the uplifting carnival of a vibrant Puerto Rican parade to a highly contested (and slightly silly) hot-dog eating contest and the side-splitting New York International Fringe Festival:
9 June – National Puerto Rican Day Parade
A great celebration of Puerto Rican community and culture, the National Puerto Rican Day Parade sees over 80,000 Puerto Rican’s march from 44th to 86th Street in Manhattan. Nearly three million spectators line the streets to watch the huge, vibrant flotillas and energetic music performances. It’s bright, noisy and brilliant fun.
4 July – Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest
Forget the fireworks and marching parades, real US patriotism comes with Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July Hot Dog Eating Contest where crowds of cheering spectators delight at the NYC dog eating contest which lasts for 10 minutes straight. Taking place on Coney Island at midday this year, reigning champions Joey Chestnut (68 dogs) and Sonya Thomas (45 dogs) will compete to defend their titles.
9-25 August – New York International Fringe Festival
The New York International Fringe Festival is the largest multi-arts festival in North America with over 200 companies performing in over 20 venues across the city over the 16-day period. Including hilarious comedy performances such as And Then She Dies At The End! and DOGS A Biting Comedy, FringeNYC entertains 75,000 audience members each year. Ticket prices start from $15.
Centrally located in Midtown Manhattan The Hotel @ Times Square offers free child stays, complimentary continental breakfast, wi-fi and phone calls nationwide. Based on two sharing, prices start from $224.99 per room (approx. £73 per person) in June, $204.99 per room (approx. £64 per person) in July and $224.99 per room (approx. £73 per person) in August.
