September 09 2019: Acclaimed photojournalist, Matthew Abbott, is the latest addition to The Travel Bootcamp’s speaker line-up ahead of their October event.
Best known for his documentary-style reportage on modern social and political issues, Abbott's editorial clients include The New York Times, The Guardian, AAP, The Saturday Paper, Der Spiegel and The Washington Post.
His body of work draws on time spent in international conflict zones such as South Sudan, East Timor, and Pakistan. He’s also well-known for his coverage working on long-form photo essays in regional Australia. Abbott is widely recognised for covering social and political issues that define contemporary Australia resulting in several significant industry plaudits, including finalist listings in the National Portraiture Prize, Doug Moran Prize and Australian Life.
“Matthew is an exceptionally talented photojournalist,” said Bootcamp co-founder Georgia Rickard. “His knowledge, extensive experience and commitment to integrous reporting make him an ideal figure for Bootcamp delegates to draw career inspiration from. We’re very pleased to welcome him to the line-up.”
Abbott is a current member of the Oculi collective, Australia’s leading cooperative of photographic artists and was the inaugural Oceania-representative for the World Press Photo Global Talent Program.
“At a time when anyone can take a strong photo, what is great photography? In a word - story. Long-form visual storytelling is thriving and photographers are now expected to be more involved in the story making process than ever. At The Bootcamp, I'll share my process for working on assignments, from the creation of ideas, approaching a story, pitching, editing, to a final product ready for publication.”
Abbott is among a list of high-profile speakers to sign with this year’s Travel Bootcamp. Most recently, Vogue Australia and National Geographic USA – who’ll be flying direct from Washington DC – have confirmed to speak at the Queenstown event.
Well-known New Zealand media personality and GoPro ambassador, Kyle Mulinder, will also feature as MC in the Bootcamp program.
With a number of announcements made over the previous weeks, The Travel Bootcamp have also revealed global presswire service TravMedia, Australia’s largest holiday booking site Stayz Australia and world’s largest adventure travel company Intrepid Travel are all set to join this year’s event.
Another notable sponsor announced just last week – Olympus Australia, has supported the event since its inception in 2015.
