Following an extensive and competitive selection process the Department of Parks and Wildlife (DPaW) have issued the first whale shark interaction licence in several years. With in excess of 40 000 guests swimming with these giants of the ocean in the last two seasons (2013-2014) and whale shark numbers remaining high, DPaW called for expressions of interest for the licence in mid 2014
Family owned business, Charter 1, will commence whale shark tours in Exmouth from mid March until early August. Charter 1 currently conducts snorkel tours, twilight sails and private charters from Fremantle, Carnac, Rottnest and the Abrolhos Islands.
Growing up to 18 metres in length these giant fish usually aggregate at the Ningaloo Reef in large numbers between mid March and early August and if early reports are anything to go on operators can expect a bumper season with numerous reports of whale sharks already feeding on the back of the reef.
