New Wave of Vancouver Food Carts

Destination Vancouver

Fifteen new food vendors hit the streets of Vancouver this summer, offering everything from Belgian waffles and Filipino fusion to French crepes and pastries – bringing the city's total number of food carts to 114. Prospective vendors were also invited to apply for a five-truck 'pod,' which will gather along Hamilton Street (outside the Queen Elizabeth Theatre) in Vancouver's entertainment district. Here, visitors and locals can choose from slow-cooked comfort foods, homemade mac and cheese, Australian-style pies and more. According to the City of Vancouver, 15 additional street food cart permits will also be issued in 2014, 2015 and 2016, bringing the total number to nearly 150. In April, Vancouver was named third-best street food city in North America by Travel + Escape magazine, just behind Portland and Austin.

For a comprehensive overview of Vancouver's skyrocketing street food culture, visitors can select from a smorgasbord of guided tours, including Vancouver Foodie Tours' World Best Street Eats Tour, Off the Eaten Track's Downtown Food Carts Tour, and the Tour Guys' Eat Your Cart Out tour.
