New trekking holiday in Peru – ideal alternative to the Inca Trail

Mountain Kingdoms

With the restricted permits for the Inca Trail running out months in advance Mountain Kingdoms has created a superb new trekking holiday that still treks to Machu Picchu through the iconic Sun Gate, and includes a three day trek in the nearby Lares region, but has no permit issues. This is just one of nine great adventures that Mountain Kingdoms now offers in Peru.

Lares Trek & Royal Inca Trail to Machu Picchu - NEW

Starting in the attractive Andean town of Cuzco, we explore key Inca sites and enjoy acclimatisation walks in the Sacred Valley of the Incas before stepping back in time in the beautiful and unspoilt Lares region.

The Lares landscape is cleft with deep valleys rising steeply into foothills then into the towering, snowcapped Urubamba mountains. Tiny hamlets nestle in the valleys where we meet the local Quecha people clad in their distinctive hand woven ponchos and felt hats, tending their alpacas and farming their land using methods little-changed over centuries. Our trail takes us from east to west, crossing two high passes over 4,000m with spectacular views and descending past brilliant blue lakes to camp in the valleys, before finally emerging close to the Inca ruins at Ollantaytambo.

We now join the last day of the Royal Inca Trail to trek to Machu Picchu – only single day permits are required and these are in plentiful supply. Walking past the impressive ruins of Winay Wayna we pass through the iconic Sun Gate for one of the most memorable views on the planet as Machu Picchu appears below us in all its breathtaking grandeur.
